I keep walking and hope no one saw me pull the lever....
Really, though. I work from a Sprinter style van. If there's a fire, I'm out the door like John Goodman in The Big Lebowski!

[*]Many years ago I was chastised by management for gathering my belongings during a fire drill. We were told many times not to do it. I can certainly gather my jacket and keys and phone and get out in plenty of time. They even told the ladies to leave their purses. They scoffed at the idea.

I surely wouldn’t leave anything so important behind.

:At Exxon we fought the fires, we parked behind the Control room, told my crew if you ever see me jump in my truck and knock the barrier fence down, you’d better follow me.

I go home for a smoke break when the fire alarm goes off at work.

A few years ago, when it was around 20 degrees, the cafeteria had a small fire. We had to stand outside for a long time, without adequate clothing. People were not allowed to go back to their desk to get their winter coats. Actually the people using the gym had to go out in just gym clothes.
Once they determined that the fire was not an immediate danger, they should have let people get their coats. I am talking about a couple hundred people.

I once set off the fire alarm at work. It was a Saturday, fine fall weather and I had sparked up a good cigar on the drive in. Of course I extinguished the cigar before I entered the building but it was sitting there on my desk, just begging to be enjoyed. I then recalled a fellow employee who use to light up at work on weekends. Knowing I was the only one on my floor, I figured I could light up without bothering anyone. Well, wouldn't you know it, the fire alarm went off about 5 minutes into the cigar. The realization then hit me...we had recently moved into the new building and of course it had the latest smoke detector system. I quickly called security who confirmed the alarm was from my area. I informed them there was no fire but a case of misadventure. I then decided the work could wait until Monday, and sheepishly left the building, lesson learned.

That's a great example of how common sense goes out the window when you have strict, mandatory "policies" that must be followed to the letter, without regard to the particulars of any given situation.
And that approach to nearly everything has become the norm these days.

Actually, I run INTO the building, verify whether or not there IS a fire while my officers are evacuating inmates.

At the library we have three floors, we have to clear them of patrons before we are allowed to exit the building. When there is a fire alarm it's maddening how folks will refuse to leave their laptops and will spend several minutes shutting them down to bring them with them. I mean, I get it, but I'm not dying in a fire for your Macbook.
