Well, I did two things:
- Ordered the Amazon box, that will be handy for my pipe bag (where matches always come out of the boxes).
- I made a small mason jar match holder as pictured, but the none of the sandpaper that I have will light the Diamond matches (down to 150). It's easy to shake out a match and it will keep them dry in my workshop. Any idea on what would work for the striker? I could use the panel on the side of the Diamond box, but it won't last long so I was hoping there was a better alternative.

I keep mine in a tin that I have set up with my tabacco as well for when I go to work that used to be a Mentats tin prop from the Fallout games.

Stick some sandpaper strip on the outside of the jar. Strike anywhere's will work on that. Watch that hole in the top! No sparks there!

I used to use matches while camping, so I didn't have to worry about the Zippo running dry. Kept 'em in an altoids tin with the matchstrip taped to the inside (actually that's my fire kit). Then I realized I can just put a stick in the campfire and light my pipe off that. So now I don't use matches.

Al, the reason why they won't ignite on sandpaper is because they are phosphorus matches and will only light on the strip on the box (or a window pane where the friction is enough) which is impregnated with phosphorus. These are usually described as 'safety matches'.
It's the sulphur matches that ignite on sandpaper.

Jay.

Looks like Al's supermarket is in a nanny state!
Personally, I don't like kitchen matches for lighting pipes- way too much wood is wasted, and it take 1.438 seconds more for the sulphur to burn off....
