I have a good mind and cut myself a bunch of filters from balsa plank from the local hardware shop rather than buying charcoal filters the whole time, as I use them mostly to absorb some moisture.
I used to smoke Brigham pipes which all used Balsam wood filters
They take out moisture OK but that is all. The benefits of removing bite & rough edges with 9mm carbon filters are lost with Balsam filters

Thanks, yeah I noticed some more flavour coming through with the balsa wood “filters” (more like inserts). Can’t decide yet which I prefer, I’ll have to test it out with a bunch of blends that I know.

I use filters exclusively (9mm) and think they are great. For me, they make the smoke smoother, tastier, dryer and possibly healthier.
