Thought I'd come back yet again and add some imagery...
...Player's spent a fortune on advertising - as well as being beautiful it can be very informative.
Canadians will likely be more familiar with "Hero" than most Americans, he's one of the most famous mascot logos in all of tobaccodom though!

I really like how they kept the tradition alive for so long, and these mid to late 60's ads are pretty damn cool:

And all paths seem to lead back to the Cope Bros. because they were such a large presence on the early scene, get a gander of what their factory was depicted as looking like:

Absolutely massive!
A few more Escudo examples:

They were always innovative, even avant garde in a way, and this seems to be like an early example of the term Navy Flake being put to use:

It'd be cool to actually track down and pinpoint the first brand to make use of the term Navy Flake because it seems to have superceded all the other terms and looms large on the contemporary baccy scene.
Again, here I came w/o actually looking up anything in print, a little later I'm gonna go to the yellowed pages and see if I can find a Navy Flake and if so, at what time period...

Last I queried Per George Jensen of Mac Barens, he said there is no rum, nor ever was, in their Navy Flake. I get a honey flavor from it.

The tin art. If it has an old ship or a sailing theme on the tin, it has to be true navy flake. LOL
Cheers,
J

One of my favorites that has not been mentioned on this thread is Rotary Luxury Navy Cut. It is a very nice flake that comes perfectly humidified for smoking right out of the tin. Great morning smoke with coffee.

Another interesting example of a prick? I'll leave that one alone. If you've read this thread this far, you need to know that, by decree of the humorist writer Dave Barry and associates, Sept. 19 each year is "Talk Like A Pirate Day," when it is appropriate to say such things as "Arrrgggg!" and "Avast ye maties," and other such well-worn seagoing talk. Just a reminder, so you can put it on your calendar again this year.

Cool!
I'll try my best surly tone and try to recite this refrain:

MLC, I have to give you a pat on the back for finding that quote, I'm pretty sure "shitten arse'd puppies" is one of the best insults I've ever come across :D
The one thing ALL navy flakes have in common are the words "Navy Flake" on their label  After that, it's all hearsay and conjecture.

I agree on both counts!
After reading that excerpt I gotta get me a copy of The Chapters by Nauticus,

because I love that kind of wonderfully descriptive language!

I gotta get me a copy of The Chapters by Nauticus,
Found it on Google Play for free.

You can read it online, but the Android/Iphone app is best. I basically quit buying books when I figured out there are millions of great old books out of copyright and at your fingertips. Many of them would be difficult to find in person too!
Having a few hundred books on your phone makes it easy to read when you get a few minutes, and absolutely free is a thing that fits my budget.
Always takes me a few pages to get used to books from the 1700's, automatically reading S's instead of F's.

I'm currently reading "The Country Houfewife and Lady's Director In the Management of a Houfe and Delightful Profits of a Farm" from the year MDCCXXXVI (1736).

Kind of neat book, sort of a calendar that goes month to month telling you in October you should be doing this in the garden, this with the livestock, this in the kitchen. It turns out my wife has a lot to learn about managing our home. According to the book, she should already have our Fall beer supply put in, and our swine slaughtered and potted in lard for the summer.

Hahaha. I don't know what the book is about or exactly who "nauticus" is since it's a pseudonym and the title page lists "Published by The Publisher" as the printing house but the first sentence of the book is "Reviewers may kiss my a___"

LOL

yeah, those f'd s's take some acclimation, at first I tend to read them with a weird lisp like Sylvester the Cat,

haha
The houfewife book sounds neat,

bacon 'n ham has always been a major priority!

:)

Best.Opening.Sentence.Ever.
I read the book here:

...but I'm an old curmudgeon bibliophile with a fetish for yellowed paper pages, it seems many of the modern reprints use a modern font and don't quite capture that great archaic feel...I may just print it out just so I can relax back witha pipe anda reading.
Stanford University sez about The Chapters:

"A satire on naval affairs, in imitation of Sterne. "
Laurence Sterne was an awesome dude,

his Tristram Shandy is especially an innovative classic,

the film of that particular book is well worth watching too,

if you of the sort who isn't annoyed by such cheeky stuff,

some people get highly irritated by such stuff,

as I've discovered...

LOL
