Having an Hoyo de Monterrey Amistad Gold by AJ Fernandez while walking in Montreal.

I’m waiting outside an Asian market on Wellington Street while Susan shops for some ingredients to put in our ramen tonight. An older gentleman just borrowed my cigar to light his joint!

@sparker69
Fine weather for a cigar. Wellington St. and the Verdun neighbourhood is a very interesting place to go for a walk.

Met up with @sparker69 at Blatter & Blatter in Montreal today. He very kindly brought a Cuban Bolivar (a fave of mine unbeknownst to him) for me to smoke while walked around town.

I posted these pics in a different thread a little earlier tonight.
Nice pics, Theron, old pal (don't mean to be presumptuous; I'll certainly call you Mr. Monkey if you prefer).

I have two B&B pipes (out of a total of only eighteen, so clearly I'm an admirer) and haven't been to Montreal since I was a kid, but would love to stop by their shop if I ever get back up there.

Jeff would work, too, Monsieur Cloozoe.

@sparker69 and I were talking about the shop’s near iconic status and its disproportionate size. The business has been in Montreal since 1907 and in the current location since 1970. Their reputation is so large and the shop is just a hole in the wall. I hope they continue to survive. The area surrounding the shop seems odd and dead.

Their stock was diminished since my last visit; I felt badly not purchasing anything from them on this trip, but no pipes on hand appealed to me other than a Meerschaum Polar Bear table pipe that was not for sale. I picked up a large Liverpool last time (although Patrick Blatter referred to it as a Lovat). However, we were informed that a shipment of good briar had just come in from Italy and they would be making pipes again, taking pictures and putting them on their website. I look forward to their new offerings. If I get up to Montreal again, maybe I’ll pick up another of their pipes, or get one online.

Bien; merci, Jeff. And please call me Jacques

Yeah, I've read about it being just a little shop, but iconic nonetheless. It's a miracle it's held on at all. And I loved Montreal on my one and only visit. Is it only Patrick making pipes now or is Robert still at it?

I’m not sure. Pierre, who was in the store yesterday spoke about making the pipes using the collective “we,” so I’m not sure how the duties work out.

I just tried a Rocky Patel 2003 Vintage Cameroon robusto. I've got to say, it was pretty average. Definitely not worth the premium price that RP cigars seem to command. Disappointing.

You can get most RP at online auction for very cheap. The reason seems to be their typically lackluster quality. I haven't had one in 10 years or more, so can't say whether any are worth a snot.

Yes, it was looking a bit empty yesterday with so many pipes missing in their stock - was almost a bit sad for them til Pierre explained that the new briar had come in!
As I always say - legends - and legends in this city. Despite all the restrictions and changing of tastes and styles, they continue. The pandemic was really hard on them, but with this summer and prepandemic levels of tourists in town, they really got a much needed boost in their sales.
Makes me think of a work colleague, what she said to me once: I love walking around the downtown and exploring all the little streets and shops. And doing this for years, I've gotten to love all the little landmarks even if I only know them in passing. Once I was sad that one of these stores, that I passed regularly, had closed and I mentioned it to my colleague. Without batting an eye, she replied: "Did you go into the store or buy anything there?" I hadn't.
I think sometimes we don't realize the treasures we have around us and we end up taking them for granted. Let me tell ya - if I had known what I know today, I would've bought MUCH better and many more Montreal Expos seats when I had the chance! This I will not do with Blatter & Blatter. These men are legends and the work they produce is remarkable, (and I tell them so). We can say in Quebec - well, I'll get a Blatter pipe to start and then I'll move on to something better online. How wrong we can be! All my Blatter's smoke beautifully and I am blessed to have a chance to talk on a regular basis with the artisans who made them! We can complain in Canada about the taxes on tobacco and the olive green packaging, but I'm going to make sure I'm always buying some tobacco at Blatter and other good b&m tobacco shops in my city. Because if we lose them, it will be a monumental loss.
