The late Mr. Len Rust of Wattisfield,Suffolk worked for Henry Watson's Potteries Ltd in Wattisfield, for 50 yrs, retiring in July 1973.
His hobby was making clay pipes from waste clay at his work place. When he retired his employers presented him with a small electric kiln so that he could continue his hobby. They would supply his clay free of charge. The firing temperature is about 1,200 degrees higher than usual for pipe earth. Longer pipes did not fit in his oven, so he brought those to the pottery where they could be fried for free. The most notable are the “giant pipes" thatare 39 cm in length of 39 cm, the bowl is large and decorated.
