A house blend called "Lost Lagoon". I quickly moved onto Perterson Old Dublin, and then McClelland British Woods. Lots more to explore still but my current thought is Oriental Forward with a good back up of Latakia and you cannot go wrong!

Tinderbox's Philosopher in 1975. I sure wasn't ready for it at age 14. But, I tried Sherlock's Choice in 1977 and liked that better.

I'm pretty sure it was Middleton's Walnut ... probably why I stuck with Carter Hall! :)

Either Frogmorton Original or Dunhill EMP--I bought 'em both in the same baccy order. It was only last fall, I should remember this...
I think it must have been the Frogmorton--first, because I'm a Tolkien fan, and I would have tried it first just because of the name. And second, because my distinct memory is of the woodsy catholic-mass-incense note. As a former altar boy (former catholic, really), it was a weird and unexpected flood of memory. I still get that from Frogmorton, but never as strong as the first time.
Yeah, definitely Frogmorton.

My first English was the Frog on a Log (Frog Morton)up to that point I had only smoke aromatics and the joys of pipe smoking were lost on me. My local tobacconist recommended that blend and I was hooked.

For me it was EMP, I had been fumbling around with aromatics and this forum was what pushed me towards EMP. I sat in silence, after I lit that bowl and just smoked. I cant tell you how much of a game changer that was for me. I haven't looked back since. My favorite blend thus far is Gaslight, and I don't think I've met a lat blend I really didn't care for, if I did, it was because it didn't have enough Nicotine for me.

I've only been pipesmoking a few years, so I didn't start out with one of the classics,

it was actually F&K Merde de Cheval - a very light English and the Lat really didn't overwhelm...
...then I decided I needed to try a "real English" and settled on a tin of Dunhill Standard, after opening I was repulsed by the smell and didn't even try to smoke it LOL I gave the tin away!
I'm not really a natural Lat guy and I then decided that they just weren't for me, but later on a couple of forum members sent me generous samples...
...first it was Jimbo with his homebrew which had St. Bruno, Kendal Kentucky, a good portion of Lat and maybe other varities of leaf too, but the Lat was really present and it was supergood smoky campfire style and that whole experience opened my eyes!
Then Pitchfork sent me an insanely incredible Lat sampler care package (including Penz!) and I was off to the races...
...I still don't really smoke much Lat, but I do have a goodly few in regular rotation.

I had been smoking Tinder Box's Crown Royale since the early 1980s. It's a mild aromatic. When it became unavailable a few years ago I decided to get adventurous and ordered their Sherlock's Choice which had been recommended online as an English blend for beginners. It's been onward and upward since then.

Dunhill 965 for me, circa 1995 or so. Loved the stuff then, and still do, though I do prefer a bit more Orientals in the mix-- a'la McC's Wilderness, GLP's Westminster, SH Exotique.........

My first Latakia blend was my first pipe tobacco: Frog Morton Cellar. That was just last year and I bought some more lately and now can't stand the stuff. Pretty much all I smoke now are Latakia blends my current favourites being C&D Star of the East and SH's Exotique.

It is pretty much a majority then, who's experience with smoke flavored tobacco has become 'trans formative'.

Traditional sources for Latakia processed tobacco and Oriental tobacco are likely not stable due to political unrest and also climate change.

Just as the industry has moved to make Perique flavoring continually available by replicating processes, it will and probably already has developed some way to keep making what passes for Latakia.

As long as we have photosynthesis, we'll probably have somebody growing and curing tobacco, so, despite changes mankind will still be generating tasty blends.

Change is inevitable, so it's best to get along with it.
