Last Night's Smokes and Morning Festivities: Been working on these two McQueen Longstems, top is the Seafarer, and bottom is the Prospector. Got my sea legs recently, and have come to some conclusions which may or may not interest you, so
Skippable Drivel it is, below the smoke data and pic.
Both pipes are essentially the same - same bowl size (medium), giving me 45 minutes to an hour depending on tobacco. Both smoke essentially the same, being "sippers", good for company and conversation. Both are eyecatchers, If you like this kind of thing. Fine so far.
Both like English tobaccos the best - I've found this universal amongst cherrywood pipes, which both of these are. I've sanded the tips, because when I don't use the "gizmo" I smoke these as is. They're long enough that the extra two inches added by the giz makes them unweildy, and I've found that varnish seems to sensitize my lips and I'm whiny enough without adding to the hit list.
In any case, I've had very good smokes in both pipes over the last while, tobaccos smoked including, but not exclusive to my own
Basic English, Pirate Kake, TobaccoBarn's Traditional English, Presbyterian Mixture, and
Arango's Balkan Supreme. In any case, they respond well to the English thing and I see no reason to change. They also smoke codgers like SWR and Smoker's Pride Whiskey okay, but frankly, what doesn't?
Skippable Drivel: I've become either experienced enough, or perhaps foolish or arrogant enough, to offer my notes on different pipe woods. I'll comment on cherry first, as I have about half a dozen or eight pipes in this wood.
Although pipes can and have been made of probably any kind of wood or substance available, I don't think cherry is particularly the best wood for pipes. It's okay, but doesn't seem to mature like other woods I have. It doesn't transmit subtlety like orientals or complex aros like Autumn Evening as well as briar, olivewood, ash, or pear. Once these are broken in, they're all excellent in their neutrality.
I do have one exception which proves the rule, so to speak. I have a McQueen Russet in cherrywood which absolutely dotes on Savinelli 140, but whether or not this state of grace remains, remains to be seen.
One final note for this Skippable Drivel, McQueen has discontinued all of their pipes made of ash, so I now have five collector's items
I somehow doubt if there is a real collector out there who could care less, however. I'm under no illusions and collection anything but users is beyond my knowledge and financial ability. And as I've said before, I need another pipe like I need another hole in my head. I'll comment on my experience with other woods as they come up in smokes.
Have a great Thursday. This has been a stellar day for pipes, which Thursday and Sunday seem to hold the trump cards for.
