Bizarro world we live in, that’s all I’ll say to not broach the “political post” rulehere in China you can smoke in the hotel without any issues, and in general there aren’t the same strict restrictions on smoking. For us pipe smokers, it feels like true freedom!

I get your point. But honestly, wherever you go, people mostly care about the same simple things — family, work, home. I’ve never felt it’s my place to tell another country how to live; I’m just a guest. China has its nuances, Thailand and Vietnam have theirs. I would agree about people (general public) caring about similar things. It's not the people that's the issue. It's the bigger agendas that the people have no say over that aren't so friendly.
