I’m glad I had some forthought much earlier this morning and set this out ... and nearly forgot about it. I knew I was going to take the truck up Old Mission Peninsula, so I’ve got this to enjoy on the road:

Sam Gawith 1792. Fortunately the relative humidity in here is as dry as toast, so it was ready to rub out and pack into this Peterson Premier System 313 (perfect small, light hanger for driving that’s also bent enough to be somewhat airbag-safe).
1792 is good, and I have some of that.Have not smoked it in months.Maybe I will later.

One errand on the road down (what a terrific day out for the drive). One Zoom conference down (I still think it’s weird, but I’m getting the hang of it). Now time for a lo-ooo-ong coffee break. I’m lucky enough to have one of those coffee makers that keeps the contents relatively warm, so it’s leftovers from this morning, black.

The Premier 313 served my earlier flake well, and one good flake deserves another, ghost or not.

This rubbed out Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired dried almost too well during that video conference and the opening burn tastes really good right now.

Samuel Gawith's Cabbie's Mixture in my self-carved kit from SmokingPipes.

I've found my groove with VaPers and this is a VaPer.

I'm halfway through my first bowl. I like it and would happily smoke it again. But I don't love it.

It strikes me as a wonderful all-day VaPer. It's relatively mild and has a good flavour. It's not soggy like some Samuel Gawith but is still a bit bitey out of the tin.

Since I'm a once/day smoker, I'm looking for a little more from a VaPer. Dunhill Navy Rolls is still my favourite and Samuel Gawith's St. James Flake is a very close second.

I'd still highly recommend Cabbie's Mixture for anyone that wants a mild all-day VaPer.

Nice piece of wood. Hope it smokes well for you.

My thanks sir, just grabbing my cigar lighter and Captain Black now, hoping for the best ;)

Bill Walther is just one of the many makers I was ignorant of until recent years making outstanding pipes for a very fair price. I give a lot of props to guys like Bill, Jose Rubio, Jack Howell, Jesse Jones, etc. who make great smoking and well-carved pipes in the $300-700 range. That range is itself a chunk of change and all value is relative....but while I 100% respect the skill of some of the big name NA carvers.....there's a class of pipe going for $800+ that to me is just cheeky as hell. Good on em' for getting that....I've bought a few. But hat-tip to artisans like Bill that both are supremely talented and price in an appropriate (to skill/effort) but approachable range.
