Enjoyed a tasty Snap Dragon apple, and am half way through this bowl of year 2014 Uhle’s 00 in a straight smooth brown post-WW2 LHS Purex Superfine 74 Canadian with a metal screw-in tenon and a tapered black vulcanite stem. Been enjoying quiet reading time, but it's break time to check on the ferals.

I know you get a lot of questions -- inquiring minds want to know, ha ha. So, I noticed you have several (at least five?) 2021 Peterson POTY 4AB pipes, which is remarkable considering only 500 were made. Did you know when they came out that they were your thing, or did you like one and later go on a hard-target search? Or randomly acquired? Just curious. They are beautiful.

Enjoyed a small Snap Dragon apple, and my last smoke of the day is year 2016 D&R Two Timer Gold in a 1982 smooth straight Sasieni Ivory 105 Apple with a black vulcanite saddle stem. This was my first Sasieni. Bought it at my local Tinderbox for $9.95. Western North Carolina still hasn't recovered from Hurricane Helena. My local news broadcast a story about a couple who lost everything in the storm and still haven't recovered after a year. They lost their cat and feared it had died, but they never stopped looking for it. On November 8, the cat suddenly reappeared. Here's the story:

M’lady and I got tired of keeping Norton crying and banging on the door while locked up in the bathroom when we feed the others wet food. We decided it was unfair to the li’l fella because he obviously ate wet food from whoever abandoned him. Sometimes, he’d go to the kitchen, refuse dry food, and cry for wet food. He deserves better than that, and trying to save some bucks isn’t worth his sadness.

Daisy the Feral Princess and Tomato the Brave came in for their wet food. I think Daisy was a tad put off by Norton the Nosey eating near Tomato and her, so she didn’t finish her food. She’s not a big eater most of the time. I gave her some attention and she wanted out. I saw her go to the empty food dish outside, and she looked back at me. I knew what that meant, so I put down some treats for her to eat, which she happily ate. Tomato got some attention from me after he ate and then he wanted out. Before that happened, Norton came up to him, and they sniffed and touched noses without incident. That’s the first time that has happened.

Harry the Hairy came back when Tomato went out, and I had to keep them away from each other to avoid a fight. Harry doesn’t get wet food, and he doesn’t seem to care or notice. He’s not a big eater either. When he came to the den, Norton tried to do the same thing that he did to Tomato. An hour before this, Harry took three swipes at Norton and scared him off. This time, they sniffed and touched noses without any trouble. I noticed that Norton seemed to do so affectionately as to signal that he wants to be friends with Harry. Harry walked away and immediately went out.

I have all seven, plus an extra rusticated one. This should answer your questions:

Indeed! More than answers them -- what an incredible story. Thank you for pointing me to that! 😻

You're welcome. I must say that I'm as excited about owning the 4ABs today as I was the day that I got them, which was my birthday. :) They are everything I ever thought they would be. If I have one wish, it would be to get an original 4AB that hopefully wasn't ghosted to death. :) I know that will never happen, but maybe I'll get lucky some day.

(out of topic) Looks like Kopp Tobaccos GmbH & Co. KG has taken over production of the legendary Wellauer brand as of October 2025, following negotiations with the brand’s heirs. The lineup reportedly includes Irish Oak, Irish Whiskey, Mixture 965, Nightcap, Old Dublin, Sherlock Holmes, and University Flake! So far, Kopp Tobaccos GmbH & Co. KG hasn’t disappointed in terms of quality — I’ll definitely be giving these a try.

I agree with @JazzInAZ , Jim. That was a great story and fun to read. You always have the best stories.

Elk in AZ are a lottery draw, weighted with “bonus points” and you have to select hunt unit and antlered or antlerless when you apply (notice it’s not determined my actual sex here in AZ).
There’s nothing like harvesting a giant bull during the rut, when they’re bugling, fighting, and f….reproducing. But that’s their only focus, and don’t eat, sleep, or take care of themselves-doesn’t lead to the best meat in my opinion. Plus it is a very desirable hunt, so much so that a hunter can put in for years in a good unit (prime units in AZ usually take acquiring many “bonus points” by putting in and not getting drawn for about 8-10yrs) without getting drawn.
Out of rutting season the tags are a bit easier to draw, but the bulls gang up in bachelor herds and recover in the deepest canyons and roughest terrain.
Drawing an antlerless tag is an easier draw, and many feel better meat.
I’ve yet to harvest an elk (just picked up hunting big game a number of years ago when I quit shooting competitively), and I’d love to get a bull on a solo archery hunt, but the freezer’s empty and a cow will do.
Thanks for the info, SB. And good luck on the hunt............
