Further Notes on Dan Tobacco's "50th Anniversary Jubilee Pipe Tobacco" of 2009, Part 2.

After the initial session with Dan Jubilee with my Peterson Tavern Pipe, I wanted to test the tobacco further on some reliable pairs of pipes on consecutive days. First pair I tried was a duo that I'd smoked a few days before, were recently fully broken in, and both had taken to admirable service with codgers and cavendish, so I gave one a morning whirl and the other later in the afternoon.

The top pipe, a Mr. Brog "Birdie" in pearwood, is now in regular rotation and excels in a smooth smoke with Cavendish and Virginia blends. My usual tobaccos for this pipe include Borkum Riff Black Cavendish, Smokers' Pride Cherry Cavendish; pleasant tobaccos that I especially enjoy in the afternoons.

It handled the Dan 50 very well, and the three stages were very well defined, and the taste profile was excellent, with an especially nice blend of the varied flavours in the middle section. It has a fairly large, deep bowl, and the smoke lasted about 45 or 50 minutes. A very smooth and flavourful smoke here. I'd have no trouble loading this pipe with the mixture at any time.

The Ropp J06 (briar wood) also, defined the stages, but in quite a different manner. The opening Perique sally was bolder and more upfront. There was no transition from the first stage - smoothly but quickly there was a level stretch of varied colors, more defined and brighter than the Ropp. The last stage was a smooth transition and the 30 minute smoke ended with the same decrescendo without any bitterness.

The difference was like driving a great and scenic road in a big luxerious sedan as compared to a two seater roadster. I enjoyed both drives. I thought the smoking variations might be because of the different pipe woods, but no. I'll get to the surprising reason in the next and final segment, tomorrow. Both smokes were excellent, but just a hair short of the debut in the Peterson, which was, as I said before, incredible. But it could be the initial smoke of a great tobacco of a type I'd never experienced before? Maybe . . . . but could it also be somewhat psychological? Also maybe

Wanting to further investigate possibilities of the wood differences, the next pipe pair featured the same woods, but with a totally different aesthetic:

The above pair are my "blue collar" workhorse" pipes, another Brog, the "Kaiser", and the deservedly popular Ropp J07. Both these pipes handle just about anything, but to me excel outdoors as companions during activity. I have two travel kits I use two or three times a week, and these pipes are the non-lat do it all stars of the packages - a smaller pipe for lats is included in each kit, but that's another story.

The skinny here is that yes, the smokes were both excellent and consistent with the smoking profile of the tobacco as I described above, but I got the idea that both pipes were not what I'd be dedicating the Dan 50 to, and I think both were telling me the same. I pulled the Ropp out of a dedicated situation because it wasn't getting used enough, and it revels in its new role. I have two of the Kaisers, identical, both for outdoors, the above one for standard tobaccos and the other for lats. They excel in this role, as does the J07.

So at this point, I'd be most likely to go to the Peterson Tavern Pipe, or the Ropp J06 if I were to pull out the Dan 50 Jubilee Jar. But I've got a kind of blockbusting personal revelation to share regarding the two final pipe pairs, which I think will be of real interest to anyone in this thread like me, who is just getting out of the tyro stage and some lights are going on upstairs.

My intention was to post this last night, but saying goodbye to company after an enjoyable but unsuccessful rabbit/grouse hunt (rabbits are still in the woods; they're half white now and vulnerable so don't come to the roadside until snow falls, and the grouse season ends tomorrow and they are so spooky that any approaching car was met with immediate flight. But the company was good, and there will be other times. So as usual, I'm a day behind.

I'll finish this Dan Jublilee 50 project tomorrow, but will share my morning smoke with you tonight. But right now I got some cleanup to do, and also will probably crash for an hour or two after doing some snow shovelling in a bit . . . . yeah . . . . cloudsnot happened last night.

We'll see if it hopefully disappears this afternoon. It probably will. Snow doesn't usually stick until end of November or early December. I'll catch up on some comments later this afternoon.

Passing the half way mark of this bowl of year 2024 Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend in a 2014 Basil Meadows smooth slight bend squashed tomato with an aluminum band and a black pearl acrylic stem in the military mount style. Fed my cats and Norton the Nosey. Going to check on the others after I post this smoke.

Did a set of walking reps, and am close to finishing this bowl of year 2016 D&R Three Sails in a slight bent black pattern etched 1977 Lorenzo Lorsan Sigma level top billiard with a gray swirl acrylic saddle stem. All the cats ate well. Tomato the Brave and Norton the Nosey touched noses without incident. I was happy to see that. Tomato must be a good mood today because he didn't swipe or hiss at Harry the Hairy either. Harry's snoozin' on one end of the couch while Daisy the Feral Princess is doing the same at the other end of the couch with their backs to each other. Sleepy Suzy is snoozin' on m'lady's chair. Norton is lying by my feet. Molly Danger is snoozin' in the bedroom.
