Most recent smoke of note, C&D Bourbon Bleu in one of my two McQueen Miniature Barrel Riders. Great smoke.

Something I am noticing strongly as of late, is that this pipe thing of ours is very much like a jigsaw puzzle. As you progress in the puzzle, it grows and things become much easier to fit into the bigger picture. I'm finding excellent alternates for tobaccos that I favour and have only in limited supply. With hard to get stuff up here, two or even three alternates are great for protected species. Bourbon Bleu is my first alternate to Mad Fiddler, and it is a terrific smoke on its own merits, albeit a bit of a fast burner. Then again, Mad Fiddler is incredibly messy and the pipe needs to be cleaned after two smokes.

Further Comment FYI: I'm getting overwhelmed in real life . . . . several presentations imminent, composition drafts to orchestrate, and our Open Public Day at the Rod and Gun, at which I'm giving an introductory clinic in Field Target, is looming Mid-June. I'll be running that show, demonstrating and instructing in both 5 Stations (rather than 25) in both pistol and rifle. Also a probable presentation to a Farmer's Group concerned about looming foreign invasive species (you guys in Louisiana and other southern states might be interested in this one - big, mean, 650 pound feral hawgs are drifting over the border from Alberta. European wild boar and domestic cross. Nasty things.) Will post on this in other parts of the forum soon lol, but the usual .22 Hornet farm stick need not apply!! :ROFLMAO::eek: These, unlike Mad Fiddler, Black Frigate et al, are not protected species.

So for now, I'll be making only one post every day or two, probably late at night, and I'll make comments on other posts here within certain time constraints. Retirement is not what I thought it would be. Madness will end after the R&G Demo. I hope.

The oxblood! The oxblood!

Never say always, but Pre Algerian War briar pipes seem to always eventually color oxblood.

This cheap moulded stem Suffolk Algerian Briar filled with Buoy Red is outrageously oxblood, and the pipe looks barely smoked.

Cowan process oil cured?

I’ve found old Algerian briar pipes to share four common traits-

Zesty smoking (newbies avoid) Buoy Red is giving me the hiccups

Oxblood coloring all over (sooner or later, like a meerschaum)

Cake forms quickly and does not stick when reamed

Pre war Algerian is addictive, usually on the first smoke.:)

You’ll get a case of Algerian briar PAD you can’t shake!

You are about 300 miles south of me and your grass needs mowing….. here in NJ its just starting to green up a bit after a very dry summer and fall and winter. Daffodils are in full bloom and some other plants are showing but my lawn looks sad……
I cut 3 acres earlier. It still has some winter kill but overall pretty green. The Red Buds , Forsythia, Dogwoods & Maples are blooming . The grass could’ve waited a few more days but we’re expecting rain over the weekend so I played it safe😂

Enjoyed a tasty lunch, and have passed the half way mark of this bowl of aged Rattrays Hal O’ The Wynd in a straight smooth brown pre-WWII (Comoy’s) Corinthian De-Luxe 126 pot made for Sutliff in San Francisco with a black tapered vulcanite stem. Gold Star Peru Penachi Fair Trade Organic, neat, is my drink. Watching the Yankees-Brewers game until the Braves-Padres game begins after the top of this hour.

I was mistaken yesterday. This is Astleys, circa 2020, not 2018. Thos was afyer K&K stopped the beautiful presentation upon opening the tin, and just plopped a small brick of flakes inside a square paper thing. Not nearly as good as it was, but it’ll suffice out here on the beach, in one of my Hilsons.

In another thread, we discussed what we bring on trips. This is my rotation for a week in the bayou…
