Interim report:

Have just smoked the Ropp J16 with it's dedicated fodder, Mad Fiddler, after the Smoker's Pride Whiskey, my go-to "cleansing" and break in tobacco was employed twice to "reset". I got a full 77 minutes (timed it for interest sake) which is, I think, not too bad for a rookie slow smoker. Used every slow smoke technique I possess so far for this ordeal. Lost my tastebuds after about 55 minutes. The smoke was very, very good but it'll take two or three more to reset to it's former excellence. At least, that's been my experience. Used a loose 2 pack. My rule is 1 excellent smoke, heads up. Two, take real note. Three, it's dedicated to that tobacco. Stage one this smoke. I expect full restoration after the first smoke. Pipe and tobacco well suited to say the least.

I've had two smokes with the Peterson. Both with my break-in tobacco, Whiskey again. Oddly, both smokes were very good indeed. Very good. Tells me a couple of things, and the same held true for my big Peterson System Standard, which is a P-lip, by the way. I think Petersons smoke good very quickly because their bowl coating top drawer, unlike other brand's coatings, like my Falcon Bowls or my entry level Brighams, which were miserable break-in ordeals. The Ropps have an uncoated bowl so they also break in with aplomb. The second thing is that Smokers' Pride Whiskey is a great tobacco on it's own. Didn't time these smokes though, because it burns very quickly and quite hot, which is why I think it effective for breaking in.

Oh yeah, a third thing. The other few pipes that broke in with Whiskey and tasted good from the start, were ultra easy to dedicate, One independent uncoated Falcon bowl and five of my longstems. Moral of the story, price doesn't always matter and I cast a "yea" vote for more folds to give Whiskey a try. It also makes a very good mixer. One of my favourite home mixes is 7 parts Whiskey to 1 part Latakia. Makes a very fine basic English. Add 2 parts of a dark cavendish, and it slows the burning rate way down and smooths it out like silk. I smoke this home mix often and it's one of my fave Englishes!

Oh yeah . . . This also tells me why I've gravitated to medium small or medium bowls as my go-to pipes. Seldom smoke my big bores now. CosmicFL, it's all your fault!! 🤣 🤣 And you're also complicit, Didimauw, with your Ropp thing . . . . thanks x2  :rolleyes:bdw

One of my smokin' buddies, Stu, introduced me to Sherlock Holmes. I have a couple of ounces of it courtesy. Enjoy it a lot, and smoke in a little fella to preserve stock. We can get it here in PG but expensive it is lol! Nice looking pipe, too!

Between work and the weather, haven't had the time to enjoy an "in memorium" bowl for Sutliff until today. Went with my favorite of theirs, Balkan Sobranie Original Mix Match in a Savinelli Bacco 321 rusticated author. The one-and-a-third or so pounds I have of it should last me the rest of my life, assuming I don't pull a Jeanne Calment. 9/10

Bird report: California scrub-jay, California towhee, Dark-eyed junco, White-crowned sparrow, Chipping sparrow, Spotted towhee, American crow, Red-tailed hawk, Steller's jay, Mountain chickadee, White-breasted nuthatch, and California quail.

@infectedpsyche that Sherlock Holmes was the last of a tin that I got in the summer of 2020. It seemed pretty well aged even back then. Enjoy!
