Of all the “patented” gadget pipes sold to reduce tongue bite I’ve tried over the last fifty years the Carey system works the best for me. Carey is still owned by the Carey family and every pipe lover should own several. Tonight I’m smoking a Carey Italian made Freehand and just like the old ads promised, it’s cool, dry and sweet, and never bites the tounge.

The Carey system is not a filter but a special paper sleeve that allows in a bit of air into the smoke stream. If it works too well for a leather tongued old addict like me, just replace the paper sleeve with a section of plastic drinking straw, unless the dad blasted gubbermint in a tyrannical overreach of unconstitutional powers mandates a paper straw, which I suppose might serve the same purpose just not as long, you know?

@Briar Lee inspired a search of my Carey pipes. This one is made in France. I decided to go with the first pipe tobacco I ever smoked. How many started with this tobacco? Carey pipes are not for everyone. This one has sentimental value. It was given to me by my late Uncle. He smoked nothing but. Miss him very much!

It's no doubt it's the only pipe a good number of people will smoke, and it's certainly understandable if someone is sensitive to tongue bite. But my point was that after "testing" it, anyone who ever has mouth irritation or tongue bite might benefit from having one around, for that very purpose. Only other thing you might try is a buffalo horn calabash, lol.

But like no pipes are for all people, which is a good thing, no tobacco is so good it's for everyone. Taste is subjective, and no one is "wrong" in how they taste a tobacco, but my Captain Black was indeed my first and still gives me the worst tongue bite of anything in existence decades later. I hate to throw out any tobacco, and don't think I've ever done it, and I was given some by a friend recently who quit smoking. This pipe allows me to smoke it, when I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

I'd also venture to guess that I'm very much in the minority with the good Captain, because if it had the effect on others it did on me, it wouldn't be such a huge seller for so long. As luck would have it, I also have about 8oz. of Borkum Riff vanilla left over from when my work partner passed, so I have well over a pound of vanilla cavendish to puff up, and this pipe will help me do it.

St. Patrick's Day Reserve in this meer. I'm trying to get through a few too many open tins as I've got a couple I've not tried before on the way. Watching the movie Twisters. It's probably not the best time of year to watch this, living in Tornado Alley, but I'm finally getting around to watching it anyway. Coffee on the side. Today was the first day of a long needed vacation.View attachment 380778
