Just finished smoking Heine's Blend in the very first pipe I ever bought ($2.49) in 1974; a smooth three quarter bend Dr. Grabow Omega with a black vulcanite stem.

Part way through this bowl of 1960s Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend in a medium bend 2001 Ural lattice Rhodesian with a yellow stem with white swirls.

Will + 1 what Jim said. Pipes tend to be very forgiving: keep them clean and watch your cadence and they will just keep going. The flavour you get depends on the pipe, tobacco, packing, cadence, type of light, ambient temperature...so all you can do is do the basics well and things should be fine.
Re the responses to your posts - most folk who blurt in this corner of the site do so with no expectation of a reply. Which is a good job, as discussions are what the main boards are for. It's great to hear from you, but please don't worry or be offended if you get limited answers!

This month, I finally found the coveted Penzance, grabbed a few tins, put a couple in the cellar and popped one open. I have been very impressed with the subtleties. It does remind me of another blend or two, but nothing concrete that I cna put my finger one. Regardless, I am sure that in a couple years I will pop open another one.
