Amusing how a lighthearted, ironic post about a long-discontinued blend provoked such a delicate response.
Had I written the same about McClelland 40th Anniversary, Dunhill Elizabethan, Germain’s Rich Dark Flake, Esoterica Stonehaven, Balkan Sobranie, Rattray’s Dark Fragrant, Condor Plug, Capstan Blue (pre-1990s) or Gallagher’s War Horse — I doubt anyone would’ve felt the need to intervene. These vanished blends are usually discussed with quiet nostalgia, not corporate anxiety.
But mention an old Samuel Gawith product — and suddenly we’re in the realm of brand damage control.
Frankly, I’m flattered. I merely used a metaphor about tobacco “extinction” — no critique of current production, no mention of sales figures, no commercial judgment.
The post wasn’t about marketing, but about memory: sometimes we recall something not because it was perfect — but because it’s gone.
That’s nostalgia. Not an attack on your brand. No need to defend against ghosts.
I took it as a simple distillation of a very loquacious post the inferences of which were open to subjective interpretation, but that’s just me.

Anyhow, I’m off to the patio for some 2018 SG Kendal Plug in a very special and appreciated Roush pot.

Did a set of walking reps on this hot and very humid day, and smoked a bowl of year 2016 D&R Three Sails in a slight bent black pattern etched 1977 Lorenzo Lorsan Sigma level top billiard with a gray swirl acrylic saddle stem. Didn't see Abner the Eager. Harry the Hairy and Tomato the Brave were walking around downed limbs and tree bark damaged caused by the lightning. Cats always get curious about something new. I'm watching the Braves-Yankees game.

No Pipe today until later. Bad Air Quality day ,,, started having difficulty breathing early this morning and had to turn on the air conditioners. Heavy Ozone layer not enough oxygen. 89 with real feel of 99 and humid until it rains about 5pm
Maybe then I can light a pipe. The baby wrens are sticking their beaks out of the birdbox and I am surprised they haven't launched yet. If they get any bigger they will be stuck in the nest !

Padron Maduro 3000 with black coffee. Sitting with my boy on the porch just hanging out this morning. This Cigar is great. My naighbor is a cigar guy, and I told him I've been trying some cigars and that I really liked this "Pad-Ron"one, and he goes it's "Pa-Dro-N". lol I looked so stupid. O well, now I know. This one here has been amazing this morning.

I love Padrons when I want Nicaraguan flavor. The Maduros don’t age well for me, they lose the richness. Just means I have to go the shop when I want one! Enjoy.

Enjoyed a tall stack of cinnamon raisin French toast, unsalted peanuts and golden delicious apple lunch. I just finished smoking year 2020 Watch City Rouxgaroux in a smooth medium bend 2021 Peterson POTY Natural 4AB No. 6/500 military mount with a silver cap and a tapered black vulcanite AB stem. Gold Star Yemen Mocha High Grown, neat, is my drink.

Currently smoking nothing due to a bout of Lyme Disease. Luckily caught in time for a 21-day antibiotic that should take care of it. I always do extensive checks, wear long pants and sleeves in the woods or field, even in hot weather and managed to make it decades without incident. Not sure how the insidious no-eye creature got me. All I can think is that it got on my clothes and crawled out of the hamper and across the house, lurking, in the dead of night, in search of its sacrifice. I would have caught it sooner, but it was on my head and apparently survived several showers. I do not wish this on anyone. I have gone from 185 lbs. to 175 lbs. in just one week and can barely walk to go check on the tomato plants without feeling like I a going to faint. Suffice it to say, I can only look at my pipes in the rack for now and re-join the gang in about 4-5 weeks or so. I am only posting this as to provide a PSA to hopefully warn others.
