(Sherlock Holmes Dark Smooth Lestrade P-Lip) Just finished the last of my Scotch Cut Mixture by Samuel Gawith—an excellent example of a medium English/Scottish blend with a subtle apple/whisky casing. It had a soft, well-balanced profile, a convenient ribbon cut, and a charmingly understated character. One of the last of its kind—and sadly, it will no longer be produced. Like many others, this blend fell victim to the industry’s new mantra: “optimize production and focus on more profitable bestsellers.” Niche blends like this were deemed economically unfeasible for large-scale manufacture. A quiet, dignified blend discontinued not because it was bad, but because it wasn’t big enough.
It’s a real loss for those of us who appreciate subtlety over spectacle.
