UFC 318, Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier, is taking place in the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. This is for the BMF (Baddest Motherf*cker) Belt, and also Poirier’s retirement fight. As UFC fights take place in an Octagon, I’m opting to use my eight-sided Savinelli pipes to smoke during the fights today. Our friend, John is visiting and will be watching the fights with us (and smoking his pipe).
I’m starting off with Savinelli Doblone d’Oro in the first Savinelli Ottagono, a sandblasted, black, Straight Billiard (sort of a Pot after shaping) Limited Edition (No. 359/550), with a 9mm orange and black craquelure acrylic stem (I’m not using a filter; I opted for a 3mm adapter). This first Ottagono in the series used new old-stock stummels (probably made from leftover Octavia 138 stummels). It’s seated on the right in the double Syroco chair in the foreground in the lower left corner of the photo.
I’m following that up with Savinelli Brunello Flake in a sandblasted, black, Savinelli Ottagono Due (aka Ottagono II) Straight Dublin Limited Edition (No. 63/600, selected for my birth year, 1963). It’s in the 8:00 position in the lower left, to the left of the first pipe.
Next up will be Savinelli Juno in a sandblasted, black, Savinelli Ottagono Tre (aka Ottagono III) Bent Billiard Limited Edition (No. 484/600, selected for the two 4s and one 8 tying in with the octagonal theme). This pipe is based on the Octavia 638 and is seated in the single Syroco chair with the table next to it.
These three pipes should get me through most of the six hour broadcast, and maybe the post show.
Susan is making ribs. We might have to have some with Dustin Poirier’s Louisiana Style Hot Sauce to tie in with tonight’s main event.
Since my selection for tonight involves three pipes, I thought it might be fun to share a pic of the three tiny Yenidje tobacco plants that just sprouted.
Last, but not least, I wanted to mention that I’m grateful for the people that are in my life, whether on or off pipe forums. A year ago yesterday, I was in the ICU of a hospital, lucky that I wasn’t stubborn and listened to my brother and Susan and actually got checked out at a hospital. The photo below was on July 20, 2024, after I was transferred to a regular room—of course, I had to get my UFC fix!
