Potted history of the company
An American by the name of Adolph Frankau emigrated to London in 1847 from his home in New Haven, Connecticut where he began selling cigars with his brothers. Shortly after Adolph Frankau &
Co. Ltd. was created as an importer of Meerschaum pipes and other goods. Louis Blumfeld became an apprentice with the Company at age 14 and four years later, following Adolph Frankau's death in 1856, he took over the running of the company at age 18.
For more than 60 years till 1919, Louis Blumfeld guided the company to the premier position of all London pipemakers.
In 1928 Adolph Frankau & Co. Ltd sold the BBB pipemaking business to a subsidiary of A. Oppenheimer & Co. Ltd. (an Adler company along with GBD and Cadogan etc.). The Adler family that owned GBD in 1903 owned Oppenheimer and created Cadogan in 1928 or 1929. They took over BBB in 1928 and thereafter "Blumfeld's Best Briars" became known as "Britain's Best Briars".
While companies like Dunhill and Sasieni were just getting started BBB was already one of the dominant pipe sellers in the world.
Louis Blumfeld set a standard for excellence that was maintained even after his departure. Additional notes for silver maker marks AF & Co (inside a chamfered rectangle) Adolph FRANKAU & CO LTD – London and, L.B (without frame) Louis BLUMFELD trading as Adolph FRANKAU & CO LTD - London: The Company was “...subject of a court order to wind up in December 1926 and were finally struck off the register on 15th June 1937".

Good blend. It ages pretty good. Try it in about a year. Superb.

Virkia: the BBB information and photos were wonderful (not just because I'm from New Haven). Posting late due to a busy Sunday during which I grabbed quick bowls of Carter Hall and St. Bruno RR in a pair of Upshalls.
