Mama thought the buttermilk she bought last week for a recipe “smelled funny” so I’m running to the circus grocery store for another bottle, which will smell funny too-because it’s buttermilk😐

Oh well, good reason for another smoke: McConnell’s Scottish Cake in a pre-republic Peterson’s 3 medium bulldog.

Now THAT was a funny post.

It's Christmas Eve.. going to smoke my father's favorite two pipes today. He passed away on this day last year at 91 going on 92. Without going into details, it was sudden, quick, and family was there. The way he had hoped it would be. A couple years before I had sent these two pipes (pictured below) to Rich at Briarville for cleaning and brought them around to my dad. He held onto them for a year but decided he didn't want to start up smoking again and gave them back. I've been keeping them aside since then. Both are no name pipes. Pipe on top is a bent meer billiard. Pipe below is a meer-lined leather wrapped briar with a twist-stinger and acrylic stem.

Decided to break out two new to me blends: a 2023 Dunbar, and 2017 McClelland No.27. First up with this morning's coffee is the Dunbar in the meer-lined briar. Later will be the No.27 in the Meer. Love you, Dad. Miss you. Thank you.

Quite a fitting tribute to your father.
Keep the legacy alive.

just popping in to thank y'all for the beautiful pipe porn. I was admitted in Seattle for a new treatment protocol, which was planned months ago. So not at all a surprise, nor emergency - though it is quite extensive. The trip to Texas was for results needed to be able to qualify for this current treatment. I haven't had a smoke in a few days and won't for some time yet, but in the meantime i'll be leaning on the fine fellow enthusiasts of the leaf here by sojourning along with you through your pictures, words and daily experiences just the same as often as possible. All is well and - rest assured - i'll be back to posting as soon as i'm back to smokin'.

For now, i'll leave y'all with a pic of the last pipe i had just before admitting. It was a nice bowl of Krater-Plug in one of my all-time favorites: a commission piece from Ahmet Govem.

And to accompany it, a Haiku i had written for such a time as this:

Transcendent thoughts;
The chaos of life abides.
Listen: barking dogs!

Like a wise man once told me, "Don't sweat the small stuff...and it's all small stuff," this little ditty is in that same spirit, chalking it all up to noise. In other words, we'll all find out in the end that whatever life threw at us was essentially all bark and no bite, regardless of what we thought about it at the time.

In any event, take care my friends and i'll be in touch soon...
I hope you get well soon! 🙏

Wow. Not sure what to do.. I've never been finished with Christmas Eve errands and honey-do's this early in the afternoon!

Got double-checked clearance from the wife to make sure that she didn't need anything else done, and I'm headed to the front porch for an late afternoon smoke.

Just got in a bag of Jim's Golden Ticket from Watch City Cigar a few days ago, and I'm ready to sit down and give it a whirl (first time, never had it before).

It's packed in a very special bespoke clay, my "Nessie" clay pipe which I purchased in 2003 from Heather Coleman (aka "Studio Devona") in Devonshire, UK. Heather has been researching old archaeological clays and throwing reproductions since 1998. She's also made period-correct pieces for several film and television productions, and I think she does an incredible job. I have purchased no less than a half-dozen various pipes from her over the years, both traditional historic and bespoke custom jobs, and I've never been disappointed. Ever.

All I know is, NESSIE LIVES... at least in my pipe rack.
