Batch 17.jpg

This morning I'm packing a bowl of Batch 17 in this little Igor Skripnik that I'm breaking in. Batch 17 as you might guess is the 17th blend that I've made while experimenting with home brewed tobacco blending. It is a full English with a big dose of Latakia. Samsun and Basma for the orientals, and some really nice Virginias to bring everything together. I pressed the leaves together for 14 days and stoved the cake afterwards. I've really been trying to let this get some age on it. But it turned out so nice that I haven't been able to resist grabbing a flake regularly. Time for a big batch.

All the commotion about Prince Albert got me thinking about this near-lifelong friend lately ...

... so I’ve loaded some up into a Stanwell Brushed Brown 86. The pipe is a solid smoker I picked up at a much-discussed online retailer for 19.99 + tax from one of their crazy sales. The tobacco will be sorely missed if the yet-unconfirmed rumblings are true (though I’ve got many tubs of this in the hoarde). Due to the relative humidity of full fledged winter up here in northern Michigan, dry time was short.

HFB on the shank / HFB and H&F ( William Sydney HALL Edward Thurston DAVIES trading as HALL & FITZGERALD - 147 Temple Street, Bristol ... merchant of tobacconist's fancy good London, Chester and Birmingham) with marks for Birmingham 1922 on the band
+ Sobranie's THE BALKAN SOBRANIE SMOKING MIXTURE.

The two points of interest about this pipe are, (1) The uncommon rounded bowl lip and, (2) The uncommon bone screw tenon for such a late pipe (1920s)

Close to finishing this bowl of Wilke Beta Test in an undated quarter bend Royal Meerschaum lattice apple meer with a black, gold and cream swirl amber colored acrylic tapered stem. Been cleaning pipes, and listening to idiots who believe in Nostradamus.

Currently finishing up a bowl of 6 yr old Sam Gawith St. James Flake in a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Deerstalker. It's really interesting to smoke this stuff relatively fresh and then with some age on it as well. It's really fantastic either way.

Winter has finally come to Southern AZ, and I'm sitting outside in 35 degree weather freezing my ass off in multiple layers. I used to smoke cigars when it was 0 F back when I lived in Minnesota. I'm a total wimp for the cold now!
My pipes froze for a few hours on Sunday morning. No damage. Mile high Arizona makes my wife happy as she was MN born and bred, but it can get too cold for me on occasion. Smoke indoors!
