Been working 14 hour days and doing school afterward, great week for school to start . I’m going to get caught up here in a couple days, I need to know what y’all are smoking and what you’re smoking it in, after all, but in the meantime I wanted to pop in and say “blerrrghh” because it’s how I feel.IMG_6789.jpeg
Tree frog, I guess, showed up this morning at 5 AM to eat ants off the counter. Reluctantly tossed him out, he was getting a lot done. Damned ants.IMG_6790.jpeg
I did get a bowl of Purple Cow in at lunch, boy was that good!

Enjoyed a tasty golden delicious apple, and am smoking year 2014 Edgeworth Ready Rubbed Match in a very much appreciated 1979 brown, slight bend grain etched flat front Stanwell Rego 969-48 (09) with a black vulcanite saddle stem. Ice water and bergs is my drink. Sleepy Suzy is by my side. Molly Danger is on m'lady's lap. The ferals are outside.

LJ Peretti Blend No. 52 in a Vauen Pipe of the Year 2024. I’m not sure yet about how much I’m enjoying this dive into burleys. It is a fun change of pace, but I haven’t experienced anything yet that would make me really want to stock up the way Virginia blends do. I’m certainly not complaining, though; Peretti clearly has a sense for balancing their blends. No. 8 slice is more my style from their catalog.

Today's bowl was a first time try of a sample of Newminster Blackberry Brandy I received from a fellow member, in a Savinelli Miele 641 KS smooth bent apple. I believe this is the only blend of theirs still currently in stock on SP...glad to have loaded up on #400 whilst I still could. Any time I can get to the bottom of a bowl of any aromatic without it turning soggy, I feel like I've gotten away with something. 9/10

Bird report: California scrub-jay, House finch, California towhee, American crow, Red-tailed hawk, California quail, Steller's jay, Northern flicker, Oak titmouse, Mountain chickadee, White-breasted nuthatch, and Mourning dove.

Sipping a Moscow Mule as I eagerly await sundown tomorrow... puffy

Today's Smokes - A disaster morning smoke - loaded my pipsqueak Oriental biased McQueen Fable Miniature accidentally with Brigham English Mix. By the time I'd figured out what was wrong and emptied it, I then re-loaded it with the handiest Oriental I had in the rack, Steamworks, and cringed. All I could taste was Lat. I learned two things.

1. Do not smoke a Lat in a pipe dedicated to Orientals or Aros. You'll have to clean it out and smoke a neutral codger a couple of times to rid it of the Latakia Hangover.

2. I'm not yet ready for Prime Time. Yes, when I tried Steamworks in a suitable pipe, I could taste some flavor, especially a sweetness, but until I'm off the meds, no-go. Still not up to par.

I drowned my sorrows in a Phillie's Blunt Chocolate Cigar, which I 'm not going to picture either, because I just didn't feel like recording the debacle for posterity. The picture below is explained in Skippable Drivel underneath, and is of much more interest than my braindead experience.

Skippable Drivel - Yes, it's break-in time again with three new pipes. I have five, three replacements for given away pipes, and two more which are duplicates of a couple of favourites that I'll use for display and not smoke, or trade for something else. As I've said before, I need another pipe like a hole in my head.

The top is the Olivewood Lubinsky, the middle is the Peterson Rhodesian Bowl Tavern Pipe, and the bottom is the Brog "Birdie" a sort-of scaled down version of the renowned "Miss Piggy". The family resemblance is there, but it is neither the monstrosity nor does it have the cavernous capacity of the Brog #52 "Scoot." which is of course the beloved "Miss Piggy."

I bought it because it's a smaller bowl, but still substantial, and I only have a couple of other noticeably curved pipes, my big Pete System Standard and the miniature Meer. Was hurting all over for another one and so pushed the button. The other two are also medium-large bowls. I confess to having little patience with a smoke lasting much longer than an hour, unless I'm occupied with an opera or a movie. That's why I like smaller pipes, frankly.

Mike and Dave visited this evening after my daily apple festivities, and I had Mike draw lots as to the break - in order. First is the Birdie, then the Lubinsky, then the Pete.

I fully intend on being disciplined this time. Tired of tongue bite 'cause I'm so impatient. So, every 2nd day I'll have ONE break in smoke with the pipes in this order, using Captain Black Dark Cavendish, until a final cleanup smoke of Smokers' Pride Whiskey. Then I'll figure out what to do with them. I hope.

I'm approaching the final assault on my apple orchard. They're all ready, and I'm looking a about six bushels, including crab apples. I'll be sporadic until this is all over, then I'm going to sign off for a bit and have a holiday of full day trips. Will do as much commenting and catchup as this insanity allows. Cheers for tonight.

@gord, I’m not sure whether this is comedy or tragedy. In the end, I hope you enjoyed the smoke you got from your cigar. If your eyes can’t see the details of a painting, there’s no shame in admiring a Mondrian or Rothko because simplicity is sometimes what’s best. Also, I haven’t heard an opera I can appreciate yet, but I do like musicals. Have you listened to A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder? It hits two of the performance trifecta to my taste: remarkable skill and whimsy. I also like a bit of catharsis, but this one does fine without it.
