Mario Pascucci -P Rust-2137 (horn ring). Continuing our summer stroll through the
Robert McConnell “Heritage” series — today’s guest is
Shakespeare: Pure Virginia. It appears that the folks at RMC were aiming to channel the spirit of the original Dunhill Ye Olde Signe from 1915, described by Alfred Dunhill as “a pure Virginia tobacco, rich in natural sweetness, exceptionally mild and delicate.” The original blend disappeared after the 1970s, and the later revival by Scandinavian Tobacco Group looked — and smoked — rather uninspired.
I haven’t tried the authentic 70s version. Meanwhile, Kohlhase & Kopp are much more self-assured: “Our version visually looks richer and has a decent smell. Now it is a blend of differently coloured Virginias for pipe smokers who prefer a ‘pure’ pleasure!”
And indeed, this is a solid offering — mild, naturally sweet, with a touch of toastiness. A nice choice for those who like their Virginias neat, with no added flavorings or drama.
Bottom line? A respectable everyday blend made with quality Virginias — though it doesn’t quite match the depth of 5 Year Matured Virginia.
P.S. Once again, let’s be clear: this isn’t a Dunhill replica, just a respectful nod to Alfred Dunhill’s legacy.
