The Lower Forty of Hill Country
"A Horse For Christmas Morning and Other Stories" by Gordon Grand, Sr. This volume includes the title story, plus: "Mr. Nip and Mr. Tuck"; "Faith, Perfect Faith"; and "Mr. Henry P. Throckmorton".

For those of you not familiar with Mr. Grand, his obituary, dated April 19, 1950, in The New York Times stated:

"MILLBROOK, N. Y., April 18— Gordon Grand, author of sports stories, banker, lawyer and president of the American Superpower Corporation, died here today of a heart attack in his home. His age was 67. He was a recognized authority on the background and tradition of American fox-hunting.

"A graduate of Williams College, Mr. Grand was admitted to the bar in 1906 and practiced law in New York as a member of the firm of Manley & Grand until 1932.

"His first book, "The Silver Horn," published in 1932, was re- printed in England. His other books included "Colonel John Weatherford and His Friends," "Old Man," "Young Entry," "Redmond C. Stewart," "The Southborough Fox” and a collection of stories called "Millbeck Hounds," published in 1948. He also wrote for County Life, Polo and other publications.

"Mr. Grand had been president of the New Jersey Registration & Trust Company since 1910. He was elected to head Superpower in 1938. He was also a director of the Bank of Millbrook and a former director of the Ordnance Engineering Corporation.

"Judge at many horse shows, including the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden in New York, he was a former president of the Greenwich (Conn.) Riding Association, the Fairfield & Westchester Hounds, the Millbrook Hunt and the Greenwich Field Club.

"He leaves his wife, Mrs. Emma Dill Grand; two sons, Brooks of Delray Beach, Fla., and Gordon Jr. of Washington, and a daughter, Mrs. Edwin Thorne of Greenwich."

I have thought about reading that book in the past. May have to.
I stayed away from that book for years just because of the title. I didn't want to jinx my marriage😅 But really, I found it to be a fascinating read. Like I mentioned it's probably my fourth time through it. It has a great ending!!!

I'm finishing my 4th time through The Expanse audiobooks. Space Opera, some hard, but not too hard, sci-fi, devilish corporations, alien archaeology, empires and resistance, one classic spaceship with a great, well-drawn crew. The narrator, Jefferson Mays, gives a consistent and nuanced performance throughout the series, just tremendous work.

It always ends the same way, though.

I am a Greek fella, revisiting James Joyce for a second time after a decade or so, this time with a fine smoke:

Nice!
And the translator of this edition is also a pipe smoker (and a Medical Doctor): Eleftherios Anevlavis is his name.
As for myself, although I have the book (Ulysses) since many many years, I've tried several times, defeated all of them...
