Finally pulled this one of the "to-be-read" shelves. I've previously read "Hard Times", "The Good War", and "Working".

Sir Henry Rider Haggard is far better known as the author of Victorian adventure novels such as She, and King Solomon's Mines - I only recently found out that when he returned to England from Africa he took up farming in a serious way, and wrote a book about a particular year on his farm in Norfolk. He knows how to engage the reader's attention, no matter what the subject - and he wanders off conversationally onto many diverse topics, such as the geology and history of the area, the people, comparing his farming experiences in Africa, and the political and religious issues of the day. The sort of chap you'd like to have as a dinner guest.

I just finished reading both volumes of "Memoirs of U. S. Grant, vol.1 1885, vol.2 1886.

I was inspired to buy these by Bret Baier's book on Grant... Grant wrote these while he was painfully dying of throat cancer to provide for his wife after he died. VERY well written, he writes like he's sitting across a table from you, just talking. Wonderful "pipe books."

My copies are intact, but a little rough, which made them affordable...
