There is a closed canon of true nostril nosed hillbilly honky tonk twangers and one of the last “must know” songs an Ozark American singer must know is Harlan Howard’s “Down to my Last Cigarette.”
But it’s one of the rare honky tonk standards where the original 1964 version is nearly forgotten. Walker didn’t have a crying steel guitar, no fiddles, and trying to make a Harlan Howard song into Nashville Sound is utter blasphemy against Saint Harlan.
We all do K D Lang’s version.
