They are a ska band from the 80s. They had two successful albums and then that died out, so they started touring South America where they fed off all the local rhythms. They came back, mixed everything up and had a huge success throughout the Spanish influence area. Everything Manu Chao did afterwards, he took from them.
Got this a few months ago and the more I listen to these pieces the more I like them. She commissioned all of these from current 20th century composers to be 5 minutes or less. If you like more modern classical this is a wonderful sampler of sorts, by one of the best violinists around.
