On the counter, by your keys
Was a book of numbers, and your remedies...
One of these, surely, will screen out the sorrow
But where are you tomorrow?

Aja is in my top 5 favorite albums for many reasons.

Now playing Steely Dan - Gaucho.
Aja is so melodic, and the phrasing and imagery are damn
near perfect. It was released on the downward slope of my young adult despair, and as such Deacon Blues was my favorite. I adored its fatalistic dark mood and wished that I could have been the protagonist:

Drink scotch whiskey all night long
and die behind the wheel.

Never mind the phenomenal chords and harmonies. The intro to Deacon Blues is a lesson on jazz harmony by itself. The arrangment and vocals on Peg are jaw dropping. An album of enduring excellence, from start to finish, IMO.

I’ve convinced myself, now playing Steely Dan - Aja.

Royal Scam is close to as good. But different mood, diverging from the cool splendor of Aja. I wore both out, filling in the gaps with the other albums. Did you know their perfectionistic ways had them hiring different lead guitarists for different songs?
