One could write a dissertation on this album. There’s so much here about cultural shifts, about social conservatism and its antithesis, about what is lost in someone’s America and what’s still there, about why the 60s failed or why some part of it did, or what’s given up in the change of generations. Richman himself never seemed to want to return to any of these issues and he’s more lovable for that maybe. My kids love him and so does my Vietnamese wife. He’s apple pie and he transcends it.
