Back in '93 in Atlanta, Marietta there was a pub called the Derby. One of few places that I could find Guinness in the tab. I would stop by everyday after work. They used to know my name. When I used to walk in, they will call out my name. Most of us, all college students who used to run out dept. would end up there after a day of a rat race. I would eat my usual, chopped steak and patented french fries. Then, I would start on my pints. Usually, my roommates will end up there, and sober one would drive us home. At least once a week, I'll end up finishing their keg. That would lead to endless wait for my last pint. The barmaids knew to bring me three pints at once after that. It was a wonderful six months.

Oh. Hooters at Buckhead had best looking girls I ever layed my eyes on.

On to 4th pint of the night.

I'm usually an IPA/Bourbon guy, but I have been on a serious Sherry kick of late. I was gifted a bottle of craft Sherry, not the usual Harvey's, etc., and it blew me away. I had no idea this stuff was so good for sipping. Pleasant light alcohol buzz, no hangover/bad effects, fantastic flavor. If anyone else loves Sherry I'm open for some recs!

Sherry made from Pedro Ximénez (aka PX) grapes can be amazing—it’s very sweet, almost like drinking liquid raisins. Lustau is budget friendly and can be found for about thirty dollars depending on where you are. There are vintage sherries that are pricier, but the layers of flavour are far more complex and you get what you’re paying for—we’ve had some 1989 and 1990 ones that were exceptional, and truly delicious.

If sherry is your tipple, than you are spoilt for choice these days.

Sherry was one of the highest priced wines in the early 1900's - even more expensive than champagne, Bordeaux and Burgundy
Sales of sherry has been in the doldrums for decades - hence a plentiful supply, low prices and occasional offerings of extremely aged bottlings.

Gonzalez Byass is THE largest sherry bodega in Jerez. Despite their size, ALL their offerings are good.
Their limited releases eg the Palmas range and Anadas (rare vintage bottles) are exceptionally great.

Barbadillo, their great rival in Sanlucar de Barramueda, make manzanillas. Elevage/Storage on the coast endows manzanilla with saline characteristics - perfect with oysters and seafood.

In the past 10 years or so, Equipo Navazos, with their hand-picked bottlings, has revitalised the sherry trade. Their entry level sherries are very good and worth trying if you should come across them. But the gems are their bottlings of extremely old (50-80 year old) soleras

The venerable house of Valdespino (now under new ownership) has been, and still is THE flagship of region

Lustau is another very dependable house with offerings across the board at very affordable prices

Other producers worth searching out are Bodegas Tradicion, Emilio Hidaldo, El Maestro Sierra, Fernando de Castilla, Hidalgo la Gitana and Sanchez Romate

If you like sweet sherry, Toro Albala in the neighbouring region of Montilla-Moriles make superb PX (Pedro Ximenes). They release very old vintages (1930s-1950s) from time to time. Their younger releases are also excellent
They also produce a full range of dry sherry from the Pedro Ximenes grape.

Wow, thank you for the great info and recs! I live in Memphis and we have very few selections of sherry, but I'm in the process of moving to Massachusetts and there are a few great shops there that I'm hoping will have (or be able to get) some of these. I've been searching for a Barbadillo Amontillado for a minute and Bodegas Argueso as well. But you're right; it's amazing that such good drink is so cheap these days.

Amontillados and Palo Cortados are my favourites styles.

If you like amontillados, do try a Toro Albala. Montilla-Moriles being further inland grow Pedro Ximenes grapes which have a fuller palate than Palomino which feature in Jerez and Sanlucar.
The term “amontillado” refers to sherries becoming “like a Montilla” (in character) as they age.
