What are "wire" messages.

Would someone explain these to me? Checking my email this morning and had a notification from PM that a member had sent a wire message about one of my photos along with a link to see it. What is a "wire"?

The original intention was that it would be something like a Facebook Wall, but Mark Zuckerberg did a much better job.
