Jay, come on latakia is not the plague - rather and acquired taste, even more so it can be an expensive one.
1) Dry more than you think, pack looser than you think proper, and tamp less than you may be inclined to.

2) Keep your pipe(s) clean.

3) Look up online the breath method, after you master that you can play with smoking your pipe to whatever style suits you.

On a more philosophical note:
1. You're the king of your pipes. If you aren't enjoying it, try something else.

2. Don't strive for perfection, just trend toward it.

3. A little dottle (unburned tobacco at the bottom of the bowl) never hurt anyone.

1. Don't put your money at the beginning in expensive pipe but start with a cheap cob or clay pipe.

2. Put your money in small amounts of two or three good well reviewed non-aromatic tobaccos.

3. Dry well, pack loose, sip slow, don't overthink and relax.

Join a local pipe club. These folk are eager to share lore, methods, advice and even tobacco. It's often a Master Class of pipe smoking.

mso489, I did, however, send lil bro a comparison blend. McLelland's Dark Flake, which he has held off from sampling.

I didn't advise him either way, and we've managed to skype and smoke together once, and he's weening himself from cigs and vapes.

I hope the pipe 'takes' with him, and for anyone who wants to enjoy passing time while enjoying a smoking experience, rather than just needing one.

"Or stargazy pie."
Yuk! Very good Duane but the eyes staring at me put me off that dish [shivers].
 I actually like it, but I am quite partial to pilchards.

1 well made pipes smoke better. Draught holes should be flush with bottom of chamber

2 read what you can. Experience will guide you.

3 don't do anything else while you smoke

Well, we wouldn't have to resort to advice from the internet if more of you old goats smoked pipes. Just one more way the baby boomer generation has let us down.
