If they are shipping priority mail thats an easy $6, if they are using the post office's box I think thats another $1. So they are not that far off. If they are not using the PO's box and are buying one thats a couple bucks. So whle $9 seems high its not that far off. I mean it would be cheaper to throw it in a envelope and hope it makes it without getting broken. I would rather have it boxed up. If not using priority mail then yeh 1st class is $3 ish.

When you add packing materials, actual shipping cost and insurance, I am surprised they can do it for $9. Not a ripoff at all.

A USPS flat rate box that will fit a pipe will start at $6, that might fit a smaller pipe no problem but once you get into a big bent you might want to be safe and get something bigger which in turn bumps up the price. I would rather be safe than sorry when getting a pipe shipped to me

If you have never packaged and shipped anything significant you'd be floored at the cost of packing materials and shipping cost. Some of the pipe cabinets I have built, the shipping is over 100 dollars, even on the smaller ones. I won't tell you what it cost to ship one of our members Walnut pipe cabinet to him. I was shocked, but due its size and weight it had to be packaged carefully. So, I don't think 9 dollars is way off. Yes its expensive, but thats just what it is.

Nine bucks is about par. One online retailer has sent me a pipe for $2.95 shipping, with tracking. Astonishing.

The nine dollar shipping is a consideration and gives brick and mortar shops a fighting chance. You get to

see and handle the pipe, and you don't have to pay shipping, and you may want to spend a few dollars extra

to keep your local shop in business. But the attraction of the vast selection online is strong.

Not a scam at all! As a person who has done alot of selling, everything cost $$$$. Once you add packing, cost of box(if you dont have one laying around)tracking, insurance, and some will even charge a few cents for gas to post office (I do not), but have heard of it. Oh, and have you seen what a simple roll of packing tape costs lately?

I've seen some instances where I believe they inflate the shipping to compensate for lower selling prices.Sure you can have these two Dr. Grabows that they couldn't sell 2 for $10, but even though they both fit in the same box and ship within weight they'll charge $12 shipping or more. Not saying that it's not a good deal still, just seems a bit shady to make a little extra that way rather than just be up front and say 2 for $15.

Shipping is costly, just cause you are buying a small item doesn't mean it can ship for nothing.
The demands on businesses now are thru the roof, credit card %, debit card%, pay pal costs all are eroding margins.
Like the item, like the price, bid away.

I know with our pipes, for small individual orders within the U.S. we ship USPS Small Box Flat Rate Priority Mail which is $5.80. For us it's much easier than trying to calculate regional rates. With the Priority mail, you also get tracking and $50 insurance, so it's actually a pretty good deal. Unfortunately, shipping is costly. Even if you use the USPS Priority Mail boxes, packing materials (peanuts or bubble-wrap) are an additional cost of doing business and to help insure that the customer's pipes have a fighting chance at arriving to him safe and sound. No slight to the postal service, but as my own post mistress commented, if you bother to write "fragile" on the box, then those are the ones that they will pile 50 lb. boxes on top of when they load them in the trucks or on the planes!

For an individual you also need to factor in the person's time and a trip to the post office. For me, this is easily 30 minutes of my day. Personally, I think that's worth something.

When I ship one of my catalogs, or the occasional pipe, I'm buying packaging, cushioning, etc. I'm assembling the packaging and driving it to the post office. To buy materials at a reasonable price, I have to buy it in bulk. So the $2 handling that I typically charge in addition to postage barely covers the cost. In point of fact, I'm still in the red when it comes to shipping costs. $9 isn't any kind of a rip off.
