Hi Folks! I’m looking at you Tom Jones!
To try to be simple:
1. I know this can be an annoying question because everyone has a different answer.
2. I’m in Japan and am limited to Samuel Gawith tins, Rattray, Dan Tobacco products, MacBaren stuff, Peterson (Dunhill), a couple of things from Cornell and Diehl and GL Peace and a few other things.
3. I’m going to send to Smoking Pipes for Seattle’s Plum Cake Reserve Flake because I love love it and SPs has a great Super Saver shipping method (even though half the time I get hit w/taxes and customs).
4. I’m looking for suggestions for 1 or two tins of something else that’s unusual. I’m ruling out a straight Virginias. I’m ruling out Virginias-Perique. I probably have English blends pretty much covered. I’m also probably OK with straits aromatics. When it comes to tried and true general good stuff, I’m OK.
I was thinking:
Edward G. Robinson or Sillem’s Black? Or, is there something else that you would get that’s in this category of “special”? I mean something out of the ordinary that I’m not going to find in Japan (that I’ve already mentioned above.). Maybe something like an Aro w/Latakia or Aro-oriental? Something you couldn’t live without that’s genuinely different?
What’s a tobacco that doesn’t fit into the usually categories that you really love? Something that isn’t matched by anything else?
I might take a few suggestions for the future as well.
ETA: sadly, my hunch is that bulk tobacco has a slightly higher chance of triggering a customs charge (in my experience).

(all the below are favorites)

SPC Deception Pass is called a VaPer but it is way more than that, and different. I consider it an "Other,"

Robert Lewis Wingfield is listed as an "Other" at Tobaccoreviews which tickles me no end. I'd call it english-y,

F&K Lancer's Slices - fabulous latakia! not like anything else i've come across (except tin note is a dead ringer for Dunhill's The Aperitif)

You say you can get Mac Baren - ok, be sure to try their HH Latakia Flake!

look throught the instant favorites thread - a few blends come up a fair bit and some might be new to you

If you want to try ordering from Peretti's sometime, they have a quite a few spectacular and different offerings: Cuban Mixture, 333, 52, No.8 Slices, Pride of Loch Lomond, more....

If you’re after unique, maybe consider semois or a blend with deer tongue. As for an aromatic with Latakia, I really enjoyed Sutliff’s revelation/C&D’s epiphany, however Edward G Robinson is well worth trying if you like burley. In fact it is the one of two blends I will consider getting a permit to import, the other being H&H White Knight.

maybe worth a look see

Peter Heinrichs dark Strong Flake

Featured snippet from the web

A spicy, Danish cake-mixture from Virginia and Kentucky, that'll also appeal to Latakia-smokers. Aged cakes of red Virginia and fire-cured dark Kentucky tobaccos give this full- bodied, flavorful flake an unusually rich and naturally spicy taste. Not for neophytes, this one satisfies with old-fashioned deep taste.

I'm going to second this one. Semois and deer tongue. Crooner is a good one for DT.

Deer tongue as others mentioned. It's definitely different. As mentioned above, Gentleman's Caller is a good one. Smells like a Little Debbie pumpkin roll, taste like a new leather jacket smells. Sounds odd, but works.

Erinmore, semois would be my two picks for unique.
Erinmore is another one with Lakeland? It’s hard for me to know if it’s comparable to something like Grousemore, which I can get. Maybe not since since it’s got Burley and Black Cavendish. Hmm…I’ve still never tried anything with Lakeland!

I don't think it's lakeland. It's got a floral hint but honestly it more herbaceous then most floral things. Like thistle and that's just a hint. It's main flavor is more like jackfruit.

That does sound interesting and unique. Lots of people like it too.

You mentioned Silems Black. In my opinion a great aro with latakia. I enjoy it very much. If you want something a bit stronger, perhaps one of the War Horse blends (green having the stronger aro topping). I find it unique in flavor and strength. Erinmore Flake is also good stuff but not really unusual in any way to me, just quite good. I like it maybe slightly more than it deserves due to the nostalgia of it being one of the first tobacco's I smoked when I was younger.

Both Silems and Edward G are aros w/Latakia and that seems different and interesting. I don’t notice any mainstream blends that have it.
