Embers, at the risk of giving you a swelled head (or some other part of the anatomy) that is a super cool pipe. I'd love to have one like that.
Many years past those days. I commissioned that one from Frank five years ago, but now it seems all of his contact information is gone. He made some really great pipes.

It appears that the carver hasn't been active for a few years now.
The poker is one of my favorite pipes to make and also smoke. Something very traditional about the shape to me. But it has to sit!
Completely agree with you on the traditional look. I only have a couple but they are some of my favorites. I'd add a third if I could get one like Embers showed us.
The sitting aspect was something I never really considered or anppreciated early on but these days it’s a necessity to have for a new pipe to enter the rotation. One reason I love Todd Brugman artisans. Unique shapes, great engineering, and every single one I’ve seen is a nice sitter.
IMO, Dunhill makes a great classic poker,shape 20. However, I do not care for the version with the flat bottom and no step,shape22.
The poker is certainly a specimen of form following function, Your Holiness. It's utilitarian in origin as it's simply what cherrywoods and cobs look like when you do as little work as possible (and, I expect that it's simpler to turn out in briar, as well). If you just want a chamber to smoke tobacco in, well there you go. But in most human endeavors, we cultivate art on and in our useful artifacts.

I actually shipped a pipe to the VatIcan decades ago! Not to the Pope but it still went to the Vatican
I have not had those two shapes from Dunhill pointed out before, Larry, but you are correct. I just pulled up comparisons and the #20 has much more character and flow to it than does the 22.
I'm starting to think that this entire thread was created for the sole reason of placing temptation in my pathway to buy another pipe. Don't you folks realize that I am a recovering addict of PAD?? Don't you care???? Oh, the humanity!!!!
Glad you like it. IMO, if it doesn't have an extended bottom, and doesn't sit on that bottom without leaning on the stem, it's not a poker.
