What’s a Good 9mm Pipe- Vauen, Barling or Rattray?

The Barling Trafalgars look nice but I’ve only seen them online never in person. @sablebrush52 may have more advice as he is “The Bard of Barlings”

Other than in name, the current production Barlings have nothing whatsoever to do with the older (family era) Barlings.

I prefer prince to billiard as well. Especially because they sit.

Ok. But are they decent pipes or not? Say relative to those that are similarly priced.

I like their looks, and they look well made
But I don't have any, so I can't speak from first hand experience.

I have a couple of corporate era Barlings as well as a second (BBS).
They all smoke perfectly well

Rather like Rolls Royce and Bentleys.
To a collector the ones to look for are those from their bespoke era.
To someone who just wants a comfortable and dependable means of transportation, and is not concerned with collectibility, there is an excellent case for saying the current production models are better because of vastly improved technology

I have a Vauen and one of those newer make Barling pipes and they both are amazing smokers. I post the Barling often on the WAYS thread, both are 9mm. I have a couple Stanwell 9mm pipes that are champions as well.

As long as you find one you like any of those brands are fine.

Ha! Yea. Busted. I don’t own a 9mm. Just the trusty .45 1911. Couldn’t pass up the photo op. Had to see OSOBUCO and raise him one! Lol.

I own a couple Vauen pipes and it seems that the Dr Perl 9mm filters are the only ones that fit them properly,but they're OK pipes.
Peterson makes smokable 9mm pipes ,I have a.few of them.

I'm partial to Vauens. They are great smokers and very cheap considering how good they are. Plus Vauen makes their own proprietary 9 mm filters that work great!

My wallet likes the Vauen price but my eye likes the Barling.

How does the quality compare with savinelli/Peterson? It’s about the same price range.

I don't have any current production Barling, so I can't comment on their quality.

Likewise my 2 Savinellis are estates, so no comment on the quality of the current crop.

I have several Petersons - old and new. They all smoke fine.
Only one I'm a tad unhappy with and that has to do with the quality of its vulcanite stem. It smokes fine, like my other Petes.
