Saturday I tried a new blend. After the initial light, I re-lit the pipe. Three puffs later it was out. I could not keep it going. I am fairly new to the pipe, but never had this problem before. Normally I only light two or three times a bowl. Would this be the symptoms of wet tobacco that needs drying? How does one tell what is dry enough?

Seems like you might have a prob with being too wet. Take some of the tobac and spread it out on a pice of paper. check it about every 15 min. and keep doing that till it starts to get a little crunchy. Then try smoking some of it and see if the burn improves.

The way to tell if tobacco is too moist is to pick some up between your thumb and forefinger. Press it together, and then let go. if it falls in a clump, of sticks to your skin, it is still too moist.

I have the same problem when buying loose baccy from the B&M. It's wetter than usual to stop it drying out in the store. The only thing you can do is dry it out a little at a time, verrry slowly. Zunis' method works for me, you can keep a proper eye on it.

I always dry out my tobacco for a while before using it. Helps immensely.

Do not listen to lordnoble, he doesn't have the necessary equipment. I'll handle the problem. I'll make the tobacco disappear with my approved Stanwell tobacco disposal unit.

Lordnoble & Juni, your offer is very generous. I am confused which of you should have the job of disposing of this defective tobacco. Perhaps if both of you would send me several pouches of your defective tobacco, that you plan on disposing of, then I would have a better idea of who is more qualified. Also, I feel honor bound to give the blender another chance. Perhaps the next batch would be better. So please also include $10 to replace this defective batch.
I look forward to hearing from you. Please PM me.

Very well played indeed.
On a side-note, I personally like mine a bit more moist than most prefer (it sticks to my fingers just a smidge, and only the smallest bits of it) due to the more robust smoke produced (same concept as using pete-moss for a signal fire I suppose) -- combine it with mid sized or smaller bowls and long stems or dry systems for greatest effect.
Very nice smoking indeed -- gotta watch that burn though. . smoke slow.
Of course if it -is- way too wet, there's not much you can do with it until it dries out a bit, but I've yet to come across a batch that 15 minutes of leaving the jar open wouldn't fix.

I'm -sort of- with Yoru on this one; some tobacco just tastes better with some moisture; relights be damned...Dunhill Standard Mixture comes to mind. Dry, it's mono-chromatic and sort of boring, but when moist, look out!
On a related side note, perhaps I should be smoking pete-moss signal fires, seems like the only place left for me to go from Ten Russians...

I hate to bring up an old thread, but today nothing will stay lit in any of my pipes. I would normally blame the moistness of the tobacco but I've tried several different ones, in several different bowls. It has been raining today could that be it? They have been staying lit for three or four puffs. It burned fine yesterday.

If the air around you is very humid, like when it is raining, you may experience some difficulties keeping your pipe lit.
For this situation I break out my REALLY dry tobaccos that have been waiting far too long to be smoked.
You can try to put it under a desk lamp to dry it out more, maybe even the oven on the lowest possible setting. Just so it's not a friendly atmosphere for moisture.
Good luck!
