The Lower Forty of Hill Country
For years I have received the Lehman's (Kidron, Ohio) catalog. For those who may not know, Lehman's is a one-stop shop for the Amish community in the Kidron area and sells everything from hardware, non-electric appliances, clothing, composting toilets, cast-iron cookware; soap-making, bee-keeping, and canning supplies; and more. The catalog is a delight and in it I once found a useful tip for wet-shaving.

The tip recommended washing one's face with soap and warm water, then applying hydrogen peroxide prior to shaving cream. The peroxide, they wrote, makes the beard stand up. I tried it and it works!

Hydrogen peroxide is also great for killing anaerobic bacteria where there's blood. Cause oxygen to separate and kill them. Great first aid tool.

Interesting…..
did the % of the peroxide make a difference or a certain % recommended?

Out of all those razor blades I don’t think any are made in the USA.
It’s been a bit since I checked but only 1-2 brands of razors were actually made in America.
I was noticing this last night . Egypt, Pakistan, Japan, Sweden, etc. I’ve really been enjoying this wet shaving since using these DE razors. I’ve got a few things inbound because SAD happened. Some vintage double edges and singles, and a few accoutrements. The PHX Shave Co stuff has arrived and I’m very happy with their quality and price. Their branding is a little wacky and long winded, but fun. I’m enjoying the Cavendish Parfum , it is a very good approximation of a Danish aromatic. And Tower of Sour was fun to wear last night. I’m not shaving today but will have to post some pics with my new gear as it comes in. I really like taking the time out to pamper and nourish myself while shaving instead of trying to just get it done.

I haven’t picked up anything new lately as you saw in pics I don’t really need too.
If planet nine is ever released again, I will buy it instantly. It’s neroli and forget the rest but it an amazing one I would suggest anyone buy blindly.

I reached for a cream rarely use to familiarize myself with it. Jack black is an ok cream. Didn’t leave the face dry but not as moisturized as I like. Gave a great cushion while shaving.
Followed with a cold water rinse then witch hazel. I utilized Spieck aftershave as its very nice and refreshing scent that does not last long at all, because I intended to use Creed Aventus cologne for today.

Never seen that aftershave, is it alcohol based?. But the chiseled face is good. Got their Sherlock Holmes after shave or cologne?

Referencing Floid aftershave, Poraso, Furbo?
Or some other company?

Yes, I mean any brand in general. Have you noticed this change for the worse? However, with expensive or higher quality brands, what has happened to me is that they expire sooner, due to their natural properties that contain fewer chemicals or preservatives, or whatever you want to call them.

No. I have not noticed this. Brands change their blends a bit over time. The longer you leave one open the more it will dissipate. Most aftershaves are not meant to last all day like a cologne/etd/edp/parfumo.

I have numerous aftershaves that last 2+ hours. Maybe that’s not as long as one would like, but each brand is different.

Now to current day porasso green. The scent may last 30 mins or so. I am not sure it ever lasted more than that. Others such as floid tend to last longer on the scent to me.
One thing to remember each scent is different on different people.
Could depend how good your sniffer is. Someone may smell the scent long after you have gone nose dead to it.

No, it’s witch hazel based.

No Sherlock. I do have a few more but that’s not one of them.

This really is worlds better than my Mach 3, glad I took the plunge.

Yeah. Safety razors are better than multi blades. People don’t realize with each blade it lifts the hair and then cuts. Keeps lifting and cutting and the process gives you ingrown hairs/razor burn.
Ya don’t really get that with a safety razor or straight razor.

Witch hazel based after shaves are nice, there is one called pipe smoke by Uncle John’s I think. It’s pretty great. That entire line is alcohol free.

Many thanks to @bullet08 for starting this thread, and for all of the follow-on contributors for the interesting content. I’m sure no one will be surprised that on-line conversations like this one contribute to purchases. As a result of this thread and some additional research, I just bought my second ever brand of shaving soap. I’ve used TOBS Sandalwood about 25 years and was and am more than satisfied, but I never even heard of tobacco scented shaving soap. Below was today’s shave with Shannon’s Soap Balkan Blend and I will say the quality of the lather was amazing; super thick, slick and fast to build up a nice bowl full. You can see what's left in the bowl after two passes. It didn’t smell much like tobacco of any kind to me, but it has a nice enough smell.

I don’t want to steer this thread away from its initial topic, and I’d be happy to start a different thread if needed, but if any regular pipe and cigar guys here have found a shaving soap that really smells like when you walk into a cigar humidor or proper pipe shop, I’d be interested in your opinions. Thanks in advance and again, great thread topic!

How was the face feel on that soap after the shave?

Also here is a link to what you scent wise. (Pipe smoke) is the scent.
All these aftershaves are alcohol free.

Side note if you want smelling like diesel leather, dirt, oil, earth, tobacco chiseled face makes one called midnight stag. It maybe also close to what you want….
It’s not one you would wear during the heat of summer.

That’s disappointing that your soap doesn’t smell like a good Balkan blend. I have some cavendish shave soap inbound and will report my findings. I have the Cavendish cologne from the same company and it’s a pretty convincing scent. Yes, this thread has cost me money too, but I don’t regret it. I picked up some new and vintage razors, single edge and double, and I got a nice array of soaps. The shave is so much closer and lasts longer on these DEs.

Not that I’m any pillar of shaving technique, just a cheapskate who straight shaves because I’m retired and have the time. But anyway, my routine is to shave after a warm shower. I don’t use any pre-shave stuff. I rinse thoroughly with cold water afterwards. Sometimes I’ll use a small dab of TOBS Sandalwood aftershave gel (as I did today). I only went into that description to explain that the only change in my usual routine was to swap the soap. I was surprised how much “slicker” the Balkan Blend soap was while shaving. I didn’t really feel much of a difference in terms of how my face felt afterwards. I don’t have sensitive skin and I keep my razors pretty sharp so things stay pretty consistent. I do rotate through a badger, boar and synthetic brush, but since I bowl lather, even brush material doesn’t have much impact on what my face feels. I hope that makes some sense.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out but I really don't need much more gear to keep my face shaved - you guys are such enablers But in a good way!

@Egg Shen, I hate to post publicly that it doesn't smell like pipe tobacco (but it doesn't to me). I did read some on-line reviews before purchasing that said it was very much like pipe tobacco and others that said it wasn't. It's hard to account for taste. I imagine it's hard to please some old guy whose smokes a pipe for 30 years. But in terms of soap performance, the quality of lather was astounding, far better (in terms of amount, quality and ease of producing lather) than my trusty TOBS sandalwood. Next shave I'll mix in a little of each.

I bet a lot of pipe tobacco scented products don’t smell tobaccoey, they are more trying to strike the overall accord of an aromatic, so it's a blend of things like vanilla, cherry, almond, etc. I’ve tried some expensive colognes from Tom Ford and Serg Lutens and they must be trying to smell like a tobacco flower more than tobacco. And I feel the same about Tabac, which is inexpensive. It’s hard to find a dead ringer…But the search must go on…

PAA makes this one that I have never tried.
I would assume it’s not like walking into a wall in humidor where you smell the pure tobacco.

If you are looking for a pure raw tobacco smell of walking into a humidor I will revisit my selections. I have one that pretty similar to that. I think it’s a Mugler, but will have to check.
