I cried over the lapis pipe for a couple days. They said it was a prohibited item and they couldn't sell it to me. So I took my mother out to town, where we stopped at a humidor. They had an excellent supply of house blend tabacco, and what looked like good cigars. Had a giant 30x20ft room that was a giant humidor. But amongst the cigars and whatnot, I noticed some pipes, specifically their clay pipes. They had gotten them from an estate sale, since they don't naturally have a meerschaum pipe supplier. Guy was a collector of sorts, and amongst his collection, I found this beauty. Never smoked. I think I'm ready to let go of that lapis pipe now.

Don’s did have some pretty cool meerschaum pipes the last time I was in there.
Lots of beards, lol, not a fan of beards.(on pipes, I'm trying to grow a beard as fine as my father's) Kinda startled me when you said "Don's."
You from texas?
Never mind, forgot it was on your profile.

Waco area but I get around quite a bit.

IIRC, there was a Conquistador and a Sailor in that collection. Either way, I dug them but I can’t part with the coin. With my luck, I would drop the sucker on my front doorstep shattering it and my heart into a million pieces before I ever got to smoke it. Lol.

Is that an artichoke in the palm of a hand symbolizing hope and prosperity ? I believe someone posted a similar pipe (but not as large) a couple of years ago.

Sorry to hear you weren’t able to secure the other pipe but that meer is a great consolation. Was it a law if the country not to export lapis?

Hopefully not, the petals are wilted and not pointed. Maybe a rose? That's pretty popular in this style. If it is an artichoke, it's REALLY ripe lol.

While a lapis lazuli pipe might look cool, chances are the meerschaum will be a much, much better smoker.

I bought an ivory pipe in HK in 1975 (when it was legal to do so).
It is THE worst drilled pipe in my entire collection.
And sits as a rack queen.
A testament and reminder of my youthful foolishness :(

Can we get a photo of it? And do you think if it were properly engineered that it would smoke well or is ivory really just not a good medium for a tobacco pipe?

The draft hole comes in under the floor of the chamber
So they drilled a hole down until it met up with the “shaft” 😏

Dentine is a very hard material
The pipe doesn’t heat up much (because of all the external carved surface

Just that the drilling really sucks

Well that sure sucks. At least it’s pretty to look at and is tied to a memory of a trip and learning experience.

That’s a very cool pipe! Enjoy
