I recently gave pipes another try after really enjoying cigars for a number of years. Went to the local B&M and talked with the guys and decided on a straight shanked briar and some bulk baccy. Also picked up some Cpt Black. Was so excited to get home and fire up a bowl. After 2-3 bowls i felt like i was missing something... So.... I sourced out some Pete Irish flake and S&G 1792... these two tins of baccy have officially made a piper out of me. I absolutely love EVERYTHING about them. From the smell when i open up a tin, to the flavours, to the way it burn, even to how the pipe smells after a god bowl.
To any other relatively new pipers coming from full bodied cigars etc... do not be put off by some of the reviews of these 2. Unfortunately I think I will have a hard time going back to a more "basic" baccy for regular everyday enjoyment.

I have some Irish Flake in a mason jar right now. I come from cigars like rocky patel decades and rocky patel the edge. I wish i had started with more of a VA forward non-aromatic blend. glad to hear your enjoying it though. its something new everyday.

Welcome to the forum and I think you made some great choices in tobacco with the above choices.

Welcome to the briar!
If you come across some, give Mac Baren Golden Extra a test run. It always reminds me of the taste of a medium bodied Maduro.

Welcome to the forum. You will find this an interesting place to interact with many fine people. Also on Thursday nights their is a radio show podcast that is informative. Brian Levine is the host and he talks about different topics. He also interviews people in the pipe industry (i.e. artisans, tobacco blenders, etc.)

thanks everyone, Those two choices came after doin a lot of reading on this forum actually! Now I have to pick up another pipe to get a good rotation going. I'm lucky enough to have 3 B&M's with in a short distance from me that, between all of them have a very good selection. I'l give the Mac Baren a shot too, they have it at one of the 3.

I do not know in what state you live but in Columbus, OH there is a store Smokers Haven.
They also have a website www.smokershaven.com
There is a sale going on till 11:59 PM EST on all pipes both new and estate. The discount on most pipes is 20%. Some pipes previously on sale now have an even greater discount.
I hope you find this information helpful when adding to your rotation.
The sale ends on 11/25/12 at the time mentioned above.
