Been pipe smoking 4 years. Trying lots of tobacco blends and if I don't like them I put them in a “No” box to maybe sell or trade. A plastic water proof / airtight box under the bed.

I have read here or heard on YT if you don't like a blend dont get rid of it but rather just set it aside and forget about it for a couple years.

I pulled the box out yesterday planning to make some sample kits to sell and saw the Elizabethan Mixture tin I put in the box 2 years ago and thought I will give it another try.

Well doggie…. it was sweet and tangy and yummy and I am just shocked.. Now I may not want to sell anything and have to go back and try them again. My wife is going to be upset because I promised her I was narrowing my blends down to 10 or less and will sell the rest.

Dilemmas Dilemmas…

She will just have to wait another year while I retry them all.. but have any of you recently had a disliked blend turn tasty?

Wessex Brigade Classic Virginia. I found it nearly unsmokable right out of the tin, but ten months later, it was pretty good.

Its very common for both tastes to change, and tobacco to change over time. Its kinda the point of cellaring.
Many Virginia blends will completely change over a few years. Not all get better, but many do.
MacBaren Virginia #1 is great when new. But with a few years, its by far my favorite blend.

I keep waiting, and occasionally trying, but I’ve yet to have this happen. So far, if I don’t care for something, I just don’t. Doesn’t matter if I wait years, I still don’t. But I haven’t given up hope. I have shelf full of blends that I don’t like but one day might (according to you all)

I tried Sir Walter Raleigh aro I bought a pouch of in 2021, turns out later it was some of the last made in the US, was pretty boring and light and uneventful, so I cellared it, have enough to smoke…. Last year I smoked a bowl was a lot better, could have been the wine tho😀

But my view is almost anything is better than nothing, if you had nothing, so cellar everything, even if you don’t like it at first.

When I first tried Orlik Golden Slices, I was firmly in the "fold and stuff" camp for flakes. I didn't like it.
Several years later, I have started rubbing out flakes. I like OGS rubbed out - still don't care for it folded and stuffed. Rubbed out, I get the fruity characteristics of the small amount of perique in the blend; otherwise, just pepper.

I have heard this before but need to consider it. I find myself always rubbing flakes out thoroughly anyway. But my weakness is I never plan ahead and never wait for a rub out or any tobacco to dry out 10-15 minutes. I just load and go.. maybe I should also let it breath 15 minutes.

I would be so sad if my wife gave a shit about how many blends I have.
