What is it that makes sugar from fruits different from the dreaded "added sugar?"
Fruit has the same types of sugar...fructose, sucrose, and glucose, but processed sugar is removed from its natural cane or beets, stripped of all its fiber and nutrients, then concentrated.
This makes refined(processed) sugar higher in the damaging effects of sugar, and much lower in the benefits of sugar. Refined sugar is much more quickly absorbed by the body, causing a spike in blood sugar. Repeated spikes and lows of blood sugar can cause havoc on your body...diabetes, sleep issues, hyperactivity, fatigue....
The sugars in fruit are much more slowly absorbed by the body, allowing the fiber to carry a lot of it out of your body.
Let's just say that processed sugar has much more bioavailability than sugars from fruit.
There's a lot more to it, and its been a long time sinse ive been in school. This doesn't USUALLY come up in the veterinary office. :)
Long story short, if you have a sweet tooth, you're much better off eating an apple than M&Ms.
