The road in HotSprings that our cabin is on, is a little two lane road that hugs the side of a mountain with a huge drop off from the shoulder. For years, parts of it would crumble down the side of the mountain leaving just one lane with people trying to go both directions bottlenecked. But, the state road workers were fantastic at moving n quickly with a crane and fixing these roads in just a few hours. We would set outside and watch them zoom in, fix it, and move on fast. Really impressive.

Not to put down the West Virginians, but they have some fantastic folks keeping up infrastructure. It was all just too much at one time. But, a hearty thank you to these guys.

So true. It’s one thing to build the infrastructure, a whole ‘nuther thing to keep it working 24x7 and fix it as need be. Most take it all for granted.

The fun part being that since most of it was built as part of the 20th century modernization push---meaning at the same point in time (in materials terms)---it will also fall apart at the same time. Dams, highways, bridges, buildings, water distribution, electricity generation and distribution, etc.

There are already 231,000 bridges in the US that need critical work, for example. And when trucks stop running, cities stop.

Let's see...

Denial won't help

Delusion won't help

Dismissing the situation won't help

and

Drugs / Drinking won't help

which leaves...

Dealing with physical reality

(a.k.a. the Second Law of Thermodynamics is a bitch)

Whether or not enough people will choose that option remains to be seen

Back when I was a kid, my father and his friends would go on their annual vacation to east coast of Korea. Now, it was in 70s. Usually, they would rent the bus, and load all the camping stuff and clothes in the cargo area. But crates of soju and beer stay in the passenger area. Of course, they are all drinking that 4-5 hour ride. And the thing is, the roads weren't all that great going from west to east in Korea back then. If you look at a map, Korea is nothing but a land packed with mountain ranges. My father and his friends would have to get off the bus to encourage it to make the turn on more than one occasions. I'm still surprised that I survived my childhood.

There's a service road by my block which I have to cross to reach the new communal recycling bins; it was so worn, it was like cross country in a wheelchair.

This was flagged up in the summer and yesterday, a squad turned up and did a perfect resurface job on it. I feel privileged!
