Irun to Santiago - 874km! A touch worn, but not as bad as my boots! What a trip!

Looks like quite a trip, quite a tale to tell. Were you lodging or tenting? Mostly cafe food? How did the weather treat you? Do you speak Spanish? A few one-sentence highlights might draw a picture. Were you with a group?

We were in small hotels and hostels, and a mix of self catering and restaurants. Spanish time plays havoc with a walkers diet, as you rarely arrive in a town on time for lunch, and then not much is open until 8:00pm!

Weather was spectacular - about 8 rainy days, mostly in Galicia - the North treated us really well.

It was just my wife and I - we liked the loneliness of the Norte - hardly any other pilgrims.

She still likes me after the trip! (Well I guess being together 38 years does help!)

Ever since I saw the movie "The Way" I have wanted to do this! I can only imagine how impactful this trek is and especially once reaching the Cathedral.

original', I commend you folks on such an ambitious independent hiking trip in such a beautiful location! Tackling these journeys yourself tends to be a much more intense experience than dogging along with a tour or cruise, though sometimes those give wiggle room for independent choices. I've never done a group thing, and my trips have always gone pretty well. My late wife and my wife are/were astute trip planners. Sometimes mistakes are adventures. My wife and I got stuck overnight in Chartre with our rental apt. in Paris, got turned away at a hotel or two with no vacancies, and ended up overnight at the monastery hostel, which was really nice. Opened the twelve foot high shutters in the morning to clouds of swallows swirling just outside.

I can relate to that - one of the hotels we had booked was actually closed when we got to it (Nov 1 - Spain more or less closes on October 31)

I called them and a lady showed up to give us the keys to the hotel and a room - we had the entire place to ourselves! She showed up in the morning to make us a cafe con leche and pick up the keys !

Very oddly she never even asked for my passport or credit card!
