My 9 year old daughter Lydia is a baton twirler. A hard to come by sport in my area.
It's her favorite thing to do, and she is fantastic at it.
Tonight she was performing in the Waukesha Christmas parade.
A half hour into standing in the bitter cold, we notice there's a long LONG gap in the parade. All of a sudden we see one of the police officers running down the street, yelling at us to get out of the road and to the other side of the library.
In front of a swarm of panicked citizens, me and the wife head the other direction. We knew something wasn't right. She called my daughter's dance coach and no response. A minute later she receives a call from one of the dance moms, saying that the girls are sheltering in place in a near by church. Everyone was okay, but the lady handed the phone to my daughter and she was hysterical.
We made it to the church, and Lydia told us that the vehicle sped past the group of girls twirling on the street, and was within feet of them. The SUV plowed into the dance group ahead of my daughter's. The dance group, similar to my daughter's ranged from 9 to 15 years old.
I'm extremely thankful that Lydia and the whole group came out without a scratch. It was so hard to stay calm, and brave for her, but I've never been so scared in my life. Not everyone was so lucky tonight. My heart goes out to those families affected by this tragedy. It is a dark day in Wisconsin.
