I saw a How It's Made once on mason jars and I believe it was at the Ball factory... they steam 'em before they're packaged, I've never washed 'em before putting backie in, only between blends, as Rustie said- with high proof grain alcohol. Never tried Barkeepers Friend... thanks for the advice Rustie

I wash them when new, because I happen to think they smell. If I am refilling an empty jar with a new tobacco, then I wipe it out, and if it still has a strong smell then I wash it, otherwise just wipe and fill.

I've washed in a commercial NSF dishwasher and also not at all. I see no difference. I always wash any used Mason I get at Goodwill as the one exception. The maker of new Mason or Ball jars would not use anything toxic in case someone didn't wash and based on my bottling plant experience where the bottles are formed cooled washed and dried before filling I'm betting the new jars are washed and dried before packaging with lids on to keep out contaminants. But washing can't hurt either. Just make sure they are bone dry before filling with tobacco. I leave my used ones out for several days to a week to be sure after washing.

I do wash, very simple. Poor in hot water, let it sit a few hours, this dissolves whatever is in there, dump the water, paper towel dry, then air dry for a few hours…. Don’t let water sit in the lid though, dry that immediately or it will rust.

As for old jars, I’ve never fully emptied one as my cellar is still growing, and I buy new tins frequently.
