I think your definitions of casings vs toppings are a little stricter than they are in practice. Some people are sensitive enough to notice flavoring tweaks done at the casing stage of an otherwise “untopped” blending tobacco or mixture.

And for better or worse, it’s pretty common for people to use “casing” to mean added flavors, so it’s kind of a lost cause to fight it at this point. puffy

I don’t have any personal preferences on the meaning. I am only going by what Jeremy says;
———————————————-
Casing is something that is done to delicately adjust and perfect mouthfeel, and it's done in a subtle way so that the end result is still a very natural-tasting tobacco. Its purpose is to be hidden.
———————————————-

If people are experiencing a difference based on a Casing, it would be great if people might share what it is they experienced so we can understand.

Said another way...

Casings = Mouth Feel
Toppings = Mouth Taste

I’m not talking about a feeling in my mouth, but a taste in my mouth.

Yeah, mismatched, this is what I was thinking, because when you consider all the various ways to blend, sure, there are a lot blends that smell similar, after all VA is VA, as is Burley, Latakia, etc, as straight leaf, they smell similar.

But, this is to coincidental, two Warp blends, and The Red Hunt smells and shares similar tastes as like a lighter version of Scarecrow.
I long long time ago I bought a 8 oz tin of Plum Pudding, it was labeled Plum Pudding, no reason to think otherwise… I aged it for 10 years, opened it up and it turned out to be Mississippi River. I was given a replacement tin but just confirming that this does indeed happen. I’m not a fan of MR, it’s too light for my taste, so it was quite the disappointment.

People keep saying Casings instead of Toppings.

Casings you don’t taste them, or even know they are there.

This has been Topped with alcohol or some sweet candy like flavor.

@kcghost when you are talking about screwing with blends one way or another Casings don’t change the Profile tastes, that you could ever notice. Their purpose is not to be noticed in any way. Did you read what I posted about what Jeremey said about Casings?

I’m only talking about Toppings, which are a noticeable taste difference.
I regularly smoke straight untreated tobacco so I definitely notice casings. You're starting to preach everything you read as the gospel when all thoughts and opinions don't apply to everyone. Some of us taste them, some don't. Some enjoy Virginia tobaccos, some don't. When my trade for the Von Erck pipe goes through, I'll add a new tin of the Red Hunt to my order to see if it's different, but it's still listed the same so I have doubts about any topping.

I had this same experience the first time I tried Presbyterian. I was expecting a light English, but it's 100% topped with vanilla. Super obvious in the smell and taste. I really wonder if somehow a batch of tobacco gets mis-tinned or something!
I think that might be the Macedonian Oriental, have you tried Presby in a small shallow vs large deep bowl, the changes on this one are really noticeable. Much more musky and sour in a small bowl sweeter and smokier in a larger one YMMV.

Not sure if its dressed with something or if its that particular combination of tobaccos that make such a unique aroma but whatever it is its cloying, overpowering and I couldn't stand it.

It's the only blend I've traded away so far. A shame because some reviews and the tin description sounded favorable.

Yup, tried it in a few different pipes. Also pretty familiar with orientals (they're my favorite varietal, I've been hoarding them since before the Grand Oriental series released.). The Presbyterian I have is absolutely vanilla topped. Not even cased, but an overtly vanilla flavored light English. Very definitely not what I was expecting from the way everyone talks about it! That's why I really wonder if it might have been mis-tinned.

Presbyterian Mixture is not flavored with vanilla. But maybe you’re referring to Presbyterian Reformation, the aromatic blend in the line? The standard Presbyterian is an oriental-forward (to the point of being a bit acrid at times) English with only a tiny amount of latakia.

I think it’s technically impossible for a single tin to be misfilled; if an error occurred, it would be found in the entire run of that lot. Maybe that’s what happened…but everyone else is cellaring their blends and won’t find out for 10 years.

Well now THAT'S interesting. I didn't even know there was an aromatic version of Presbyterian. I don't think that's what I bought - attached are pictures of my tin (which still smells of vanilla when opened), but now I REALLY wonder about some tobacco finding its way into the wrong tin?20230307_020419.jpg20230307_020348.jpg
