This stuff is wonderful. My tins just arrived yesterday and I've had two bowls of the Bar and one of the Green. I expect this will be an everyday smoke for me.
I have to admit, I was skeptical as to whether genuine British plug-style flavors could be recreated by a small, U.S. operation, but they've done it. I never smoked the original War Horse Bar, but I've smoked plenty of the other British and Irish plugs. The flavor of War Horse is strange and new, but at the same time familiar -- if I had smoked it blind, there would have been no doubt that it was an old-style Brit tobacco.
Unlike some of the other plugs on the market, though, the burley/air-cured content really comes through in this one. Most of the other plugs on the market are sweetened quite a bit and the nutty, earthy burley flavors are muted. This gets it just right for my tastes. There's a touch of sweetness, but not nearly as much as Yachtsman, for example.
And the flavorings work really well together. There's rumors out there on the internetz that there's a good amount of Valerian extract in here. Is there heliotrope or geranium in here, too? Seems like it to me. But this is nothing like a floral, Lakeland-style tobacco -- it's much more medicinal and just plain weird, but in a good way.
I love the flavorings, which are strong and in your face, but they don't completely cover up the earthy tobacco flavors, which really hit the middle of the palate after the first few puffs.
Along with the strong flavor, there's plenty of strength here in the nicotine department as well -- this ain't no Battle Pony. It lives up to its name.
Anyhow, I'm truly grateful to the boys at STP who worked to revive this storied Irish plug.

Thanks for that pitchfork, and now I'm even more envious of those who have got to smoke it.

I was anxious to know if it had retained it's dna with regards to strength.Interesting comparison to yachtsman. I always felt that yachtsman was closer to the plugs that were produced in Ireland previous to their Scandinavian incarnation, even though I have never smoked the Irish version.

I just got the Bar yesterday and it does taste weird, but very good. I was kinda worried about the Valerian, but it is very subtle and mixed well with the other ingredients. If you have ever had Valerian root in a tea you would never forget the pungent taste, and probably avoid it in any form in the future. I almost didn't get it, but I had faith in the fine folks at SToP and was NOT disappointed. Nice review Pitchfork! Can't wait to try the Green. :)

How's availability looking now? I just checked SP and there's no entry for the bar form. I'd look myself but have to get back to a class.

Thank you all for your feedback and I for one am tickled pink that you like the stuff. It seems others do as well as we are down to about a couple of dozen tins of the first production run I am informed with more delivered. Everyone so far has been very complimentary about the reintroduction of the War Horse Bar and that makes all the headaches of doing this so worth while. I know when I say this that I speak for the whole board of Standard Tobacco and its ace blender Russ when we say thank for all your support and encouragement and kind words over the last few years.

As you know, I just can't get into the stuff, I put off reviewing it here to spare some feelings but maybe it's just my palate as the Playdough scent now translates to taste and I can't shake it... The Green is like smoking Playdough doused in Licorice. I'm sorry to the Standard Tobacco Group I really wanted to love them. I absolutely appreciate all the hard work you guys do and I love a lot of your other blends including the Ready Cut version of War Horse.

Hawky, but that's the absolute best part about tobacco!! We all have different tastes and styles. IMHO, there isn't anything wrong with you disliking it.
And not to hijack the thread, but as an example, I can't stand heavy latakia blends anymore. One that sends me running is Ten Russians.
I like WarHorse Red and Green, but very sparingly. WarHorse ready-rubbed is different and could be an all day smoke for me.

Hawky, I have felt that way about certain pipes. Love the look and feel, but saddened because of how they smoked.
We're fickle beasts.

Hawky, as a founding member of this crazy mission, allow me to thank you for your candid review. We're not trying to please everybody, so your candor is most appreciated.
These are not run-of-the-mill, LCD blends. They have a unique character, an abusive personality and, like your weird uncle who all the grownups rolled their eyes at (but who took you shooting down at the quarry, let you try his old Dunhill full of Condor, and gave you his old single shot .22), not everone will be enamored. If everyone liked it, nobody would love it.
It's strange and wonderful stuff, unlike anything made today.

Package arrived and I opened it and a wonderful smell wafted out. Unfortunately one of the War Horse tins had lost it's seal in transport but P&C was wonderful to replace it. Had a small bowl of the regular and first half was awesome and I was wondering "what nic hit?". I then smoked into the last half and Lady N made a strong appearance. Had a nice lunch first which saved me from taking a nap on my floor. Only have had one bowl but love the unique taste so far. I'll try the green once I finished this tin of the regular. Hats off to SToP creating/recreating this delicious blend! :puffpipe:

Much appreciated Woodsroad! And like I said I love a lot of other blends you all put out and even though these two new ones weren't for me, I absolutely appreciate all the hard work, time and money you all put into this. We're a better community because of it.
Cheers!

Sunny Cornwall, UK.
Would I be right in assuming War Horse red and green bar are recent recreations of the original made by Gallaher?
If so then that might explain the paucity of reviews on Tobaccoreviews.com.
Does anyone know if this is available in the UK as I have tried several websites and found nothing.
Regards,
Jay.

Starting my morning with a bowl of War Horse Bar. This stuff gets better and better after the tin has been open for a couple of days. The valerian is still there, but not as strong and cloying as it was with the freshly opened tin. The underlying tobaccos were much more prominent, today, too.
And yes, it's strong. I'm smoking it in a Group 2 Dunhill pot and I've had to put the pipe down twice. I normally smoke a strong burley in the morning, like Old Joe Krantz, but War Horse is in a whole different league -- comparable to brown ropes/twists, I'd say.
