Kinda why I was wondering why foggy said it's why he prefers Petersons as well as Dunhills. I love Peterson myself, don't get me wrong, but I've heard numerous times of complaints of the stain being dipped and getting inside the bowl, which I've heard Tom Palmer and the pipe makers at Peterson are moving away from. To each their own.
Anywho, good luck kalvin. Enjoy your adventure down this road.

his reasoning for saying it tastes bad is because the stain can bleed through a porous piece of wood, having said that i can not taste the difference but others i guess can.

The question of briar being porous was addressed during a seminar of American pipe makers at this year's Chicago pipe show. Mike Butera, Joe Nelson, Jeff Gracik, Lee von Erck, and Adam Davidson all agreed that briar doesn't "breathe" nor does stain leech into the bowl. Anyone who has ever refinished/resanded a stained bowl can attest that beneath the finish is bare wood.

I have been reading these forums for days now and I'm getting really excited. I can't wait to hit my local B&M later this week.
